Album Review: Half Hearted Hero - Defining. Refining.

Sometimes great things unexpectedly appear right on your lap (or in this case my inbox). Massachusetts' Half Hearted Hero and their debut full length, 'Defining. Refining' is a reminder to why I fell in love with pop punk music in the first place.

Over the course of 43 minutes, Half Hearted Hero storm there way through 12 songs of pure, energetic pop punk. Tracks such as 'It's Cool, But The Fullblast Already Did It' and 'I'd Rather Be Out Of Kitchen Then On The Back Burner' are fast paced and fierce with plenty of energy.

While 'Meter? I Just Met Her!?' and 'A Pathetic Attempt At An Apathetic Approach' are fine examples of the strong song structure the band use throughout, as they successfully write very catchy songs which draw you in and make you want to listen over again and again.

In addition to this, they are able to slow things down (see 'Notes On The Floor'); even though this only momentarily, it shows the band have the potential to become more versatile and diverse.

'Defining. Refining.' manages to race through and be a very enjoyable record. Half Hearted Hero manages to avoid falling into the trap of being a run of the mill pop punk band. Instead they perform tight, catchy, edgy songs and they do this very well. Definitely one to look out for and an ideal record to listen this summer.
