Interview: Boys Will Be Boys

Recently Sean asked Lehi Ruiz, singer and bassist of powerpop rock group, Boys Will Be Boys from Fairfax, Virginia.

Ruiz talked about their recent EP, 'The Release', the bands early beginnings and influences, as well as talking about possible criticism for being a 'too pop'.

ATP: How did you get together?
L: Mark and I have been friends for a really long time. We met through playing in local bands during high school. One day we decided to finally get together and start a band. Mark met Joe at a party and they hit it off right away so we asked if he wanted to join as well. Mark also knew Mike through mutual friends. Now we're all one big happy family.

ATP: You have a very pop-orientated sound. What music did you listen to whislt growing up?
L: I pretty much listened to anything that sounded good to me. For example, just to give me a taste of what I grew up listening to, my sister gave me the Aqua cd as a gift for Christmas. Also I would hear my older brothers jamming out to Guns 'n' Roses while I growing up.

ATP: Have any of these influenced your music?
L: Absolutely, I think that anything that you listen to at anytime influences you in one way or another.

ATP: What would you say to people who would criticise your sound for being "too pop"?
L: We write and play music that we like. If someone likes our music, that’s awesome! If someone doesn’t like it, that’s fine too. Everyone has likes and dislikes.

ATP: You recently released your new EP, 'The Release'. How has the response been to the EP?
L: The response to our EP The Release, has been awesome so far. We love hearing what everyone has to say about it.

ATP: If you could recommend one song from 'The Release' what would it be?
L: I would have to recommend "Jaded". It is my favorite song on the cd because it means a lot to me and my position with my life right now.

ATP: What can we expect from the follow-up?
L: Hopefully we'll get to see everyone who wants to meet us and wants to see our live show :)

ATP: What plans do you guys have for the rest of the year?
L: Right now we're focusing mostly on writing. We also are setting up weekend tours so that kids can come see us and not have to worry about being out late because of school nights :) we'll also be doing a winter tour, so keep an eye out!

Is there anything else you'd like to say?

L: Thanks to everyone for all the support that you have given us. Without any of you Boys Will Be Boys would not even be a band. We play for you and we love you!!!

'The Release' by Boys Will Be Boys is available now.
