Album Review: The Circus Sands - Dr Death EP

Our introduction of the EP begins with ‘Dr Death’ a pretty uninspiring track to say the least, I mean it’s fairly decent enough with a promising intro, but the more we get into the track you realise that it’s very repetitive and honestly, it gets a bit tedious to listen to, it certainly doesn’t really have any replay value, you just find yourself wishing for the next song to come along.

Next track ‘Lightning Shoes’ carries on in the much the same form, the chorus again is very weak and repetitive; however there is an improvement on the verses, it’s a relatively short song, consisting mostly of chorus, I should note at this point that the musicianship is spot on as well as the production on the EP being particularly impressive.

So, halfway through the EP and the next song is ‘This Life (Don’t Mean A Thing)’ a song that slows the pace down and shows this band to finally have good song writing ability, it’s a slightly more varied song, the verses are great and the chorus is catchy, if again, a bit repetitive, it’s certainly an improvement on the first two songs to say the least.

We get to EP closer ‘Jive Honey Jane’ and we’re hit smack in the face with a thundering riff, this song is impressive and certainly a great choice to end the EP. It’s fast paced, catchy and has a lot of variation, a factor that the previous songs disappoint on. It certainly sounds like a song that would fit in well with the mainstream today without looking out of its depth.

All in all this EP is alright. ‘Jive Honey Jane’ saves it from being painfully average, if they write more songs like that; they’re definitely going to be a band to look out for.

2.5/5
