Album Review: Billy Gregory - If You Be You, I’ll Be Me

The kids are going to love this. Coming across as the London version of Never Shout Never, singer-songwriter Billy Gregory delivers a host of brilliantly crafted melodies through his youthful Southern tones, all of which are sung with such conviction that you can’t help but be sucked in by his charming little ditties. Whilst only being three tracks short, ‘If You Be You, I’ll Be Me’ showcases Billy Gregory as one of the most exciting solo artists to emerge this year.

However, although his debut is spiked with emotion, his lyrical stream of consciousness isn’t quite to the standard set by the melodies he executes so well. These clichéd lyrics show his age, as ‘Dance’ demonstrates perfectly; lyrics such as “we’ll dance the night away” are almost cringe-worthy, which is a tragic shame considering the strength of his songs. Fortunately, ‘IYBY, IBM’ still manages to serenade; his acoustic styling is perfectly complimented by the non-intrusive backing band, adding more depth to the proceedings.

Definitely an artist to keep an eye on in 2010.
