Album Review: March Of The Playwrite - March Of The Playwrite

Featuring members of Atom Gang and The Misnomer comes March Of The Playwrite, a London-based trio that have produced a hook-filled EP in this self-titled effort. Their influences include Green Day and Saves the Day, which is evident early on 'Breathe You In' and 'Down & Out'; choppy guitars play against Ellis pop-punk rock vocals. Whilst 'Arise' and 'Digging Up Roses' both sound like a mix of AFI and Nightmare of You, which is highly favourable.

'Fitting In' is your catchy, somewhat summery number with a slight hint of old school punk, with favourable harmonies taking centre stage. Whilst 'I Lied' is slightly more rockier but keeps the bands momentum, as they play off from each other well. The laid-back 'The Boats Are In' to an extent spoils this release, as its frankly a bit dull and forgettable. Whereas the fuzzy 'Justice, You Killed Me' closes the EP at a decent level, with a good structure, simple instrumentation and steady pace.

I'll admit March Of The Playwrite are nothing to shout about, but their take on the poppy punk rock genre is creditable. This self-titled mini-album/EP has a good level of consistency and holds a fair amount of promise for the trio. If you have time they are worth giving a chance, as I feel its a release that will grow after a few listens.

3.5/5
