Album Review: Dreams and Empires - Dreams and Empires

Dreams and Empires currently a five piece hailing from Glasgow in the UK they describe themselves as being Rock/Alternative and they definitely fit within that genre. Their music is melodic rock with soft slowed down electronic moments with a mix of screaming and melodic vocals which work quite well.

Opening track ‘The Mocking Tides’ is a great song with a soft piano intro as it lulls you into the song. Throughout the song is a mix of back forth vocals between melodic vocals and screams. Simple rock guitar rhythms with added extra synth and electronic breaks in the song in the background make it an interesting track.

‘Halfway Home’ is definitely the memorable track of the three off the EP. It starts off with an electronic/dance intro no doubt influenced by Enter Shikari. The song itself picks up the pace with faster guitars and more breakdowns and of course the ever more prominent grandeur sounding synth in the background.

The closing song on the EP ‘Distances’ is a slow acoustic affair with the emotive lyrics “So I lie, and catch the sun in my hands, Just to put the light back into our eyes” give the song that personal feel. At six minute thirty nine seconds long the song could have easily had the same impact at just three minutes long.

Even though Dreams and Empires' EP only has three songs it is short but it does show that the band can mix melodic rock with slow electronic and do it well, with a few more songs in their catalogue they could have a bright future.

3.5/5
