Album Review: Joyce Manor - Joyce Manor
Long Beach, California's Joyce Manor's self-titled effort proves to be a short yet solid release. Coming in at just 18 minutes, the bands Jawbreaker-esque punk rock is instantaneous with the opener, 'Orange Julius' being a straight to the point, bouncy example. Throughout they cut the fat as they provide well-structured yet rough tracks whilst also keeping an approachable appeal.'Beach Community' is slightly reminiscent of early Weezer but a bit more well-worn, whilst 'Derailed' shows the bands ability to create structured melodies. Whereas 'Constant Nothing' sees the bands fast-paced punk rock come into, with a relentless tempo, passionate vocals and an overall raw sound, Joyce Manor pull off the style well.
'Ashtray Petting Zoo' is perhaps the standout track; although it reminds me of Against Me! The bands thriving energy and somewhat catchy approach makes it memorable then others.
'Joyce Manor' certainly won't affective the punk rock world in a major way, but their is enough substance for the four-piece to receive some attention. Whilst there sound maybe somewhat dated, there is still some attraction and relevance here; tight harmonies, decent structures and an overall favorable, upbeat approach.
In the space of 10 tracks, Joyce Manor leave an impressionable impact and this self-titled certainly deserves all the credit it gets. It's abrasive yet flows with great ease.
