ATP! Track By Track Exclusive: States - "Room To Run"

States recently released their stunning debut album, 'Room To Run' and have been on the road since the record dropped. Vocalist Mindy White was kind enough to write a track by track guide for our readers, giving fans a real insight to the lyrics and meanings behind to what is one of the best releases of the year.

1. Timebomb

'Timebomb' is all about being force-fed ideas, and big promises by someone else. Sometimes people want you to be their "Barbie" basically, and make you into whatever they think will make THEM successful or look good. It applies to lots of people/situations. It's about running away, looking at yourself and putting what YOU want first. Always hold back the urge to take the easy road.

2. Captivating Me

'Captivating' was written at a time when I was heavily falling for someone. When you're head over heels for someone, you feel like you're inside a twisting whirlwind, unable to get out... but you don't even care.

3. Right Or Not

This song definitely applies to a lot of situations. In fact, as I was writing it, I kept having to focus a lot on who I was directly writing about because there were too many to relate it to. It's to a person/situation who's kept you down for a long time and basically asking, "So, how do you like it now that I've escaped from your trap?" An aggressive song sung in an innocent, poppy way!

4. Everlasting

This is a fun 80's inspired pop song. Lyrically, it's from the writers perspective, about the person they love just not seeming like they're serious about the relationship. They act like they don't even know what they want. The writer is just asking for proof that it's worth the effort.

5. Verses The Mirror

Times when you're faced with a situation and no one can solve it but yourself... that's what 'Vs. The Mirror' is all about. Especially when you don't know what you're getting yourself into at first, and once it's there, you're intimidated. That's when you have to stare down the intimidation, show them who's boss, and make it work.

6. As Good As It Gets

I see way too many things these days that bother me about the world being artificial and manufactured. I'm so old fashioned sometimes. But some things just don't need to be remade, changed, altered. And people change along with it all, and the ones you once knew turn to the ones that you wonder if you ever really knew. That's what 'As Good As It Gets' speaks about.

7. Can't Explain

This is a song about magic and love. I'm obsessed with anything imaginative and, well, magical. Plus when you're in love, it feels like you're under a spell. I wrote this one while reading the Harry Potter series and one potion stood out to me. Amortentia is a potion in the book for love, based on the Latin 'amor.' If I'd had real Amortentia potions when I was younger, who knows how many I would've been trying to get to Justin Timberlake! Haha.

8. Generation

For some reason, this song makes me picture people racing away in an old convertible mustang through the countryside in the afternoon with their hands in the air and hair flying, like a feel-good part of a movie. It really does signify getting away, doing what you want, and not letting anyone stop you or tell you what's right. It's what this entire album is about, so when looking to the EP for a song to revamp and include, this one was by far the most fitting.

9. Waiting (For Too long)

'Waiting' is a song about being foolish and losing the chance with a person you love. Lots of things factored into the wait... fear, doubt, insecurity, indecisiveness, carelessness. I was once scared and stupid, and lost him because of it. But it's also asking for him to find someone better, more fitting, and to never just settle, because he's worth way too much.

10. Follow It Home

'Follow It Home' is about being lost and needing help with finding your way back. It's about a love once lost, and sung about a person who probably doesn't even want to hear what you have to say, but you need them to hear it somehow. But it's not an easy task, because the only way to get back, is for that person to want to come find you too.

'Room To Run' is out now.
