ATP! Album Review: Allison Weiss - Say What You Mean

The broken-hearted always sing a little louder than the rest, and that’s what Brooklyn singer/songwriter Allison Weiss does on her latest No Sleep Records release, Say What You Mean.

The album opens with 'Making It Up,' a break-up song that’s so catchy you won’t be able to stop yourself from singing along. Weiss laments to an old flame, “tell me you remember/tell me you remember the way you used to call me your own/tell me that I’m making it up and I’ll leave you alone.” Who wouldn’t belt out to this song?

What makes this Weiss’ Say What You Mean so good is that we’ve all been there. Her indie-pop sound carries well over songs about the end of relationships and picking yourself up afterwards.

In 'Nothing Left,' Weiss expresses just how one feels in a one-sided relationship, crooning “when you’re next you me you get what’s left of me/why can’t I get what’s left of you/there’s nothing left of you.”

Say What You Mean is probably one of the most upbeat albums you’ll hear with some of the saddest lyrics. It’s good music to dance alone in your bedroom to or while crying your face off into your pillow.

There’s a tender quality to Weiss’ voice, that gives her an almost naive sound. 'I’ll Be Okay,' the last track of the album, comes in with a soft acoustic intro and then just goes on to pull at your heart strings. A song about putting your all into something that just won’t happen, it’s no wonder Weiss is so sad.

It would be really easy to just pass Weiss off as a Tegan and Sara clone, but then you wouldn’t really be giving credit where credit is due. Her latest album does something to connect, and attach itself, to the point where her words reflect those moments of pain we all know so well.
