ATP! Live Review: City and Colour - Bush Hall (London, UK)

When Dallas Green began his City and Colour side-project the best part of a decade ago, we were all won over by the beauty of his voice and simple acoustic songs. The project was the perfect conduit for the softer side not adequately showcased in Alexisonfire.

Almost ten years later and City and Colour has completely outgrown Alexisonfire to become a full-band entity of its own. Green has just released The Hurry and the Harm - his fourth album under the City and Colour moniker - and its popularity shows no sign of wavering. However, tonight in the beautiful, boiling Bush Hall, you can’t help but feel that the nature of the beast has become the problem.

ATP! Album Review: City & Colour - The Hurry and The Harm

Get your Kleenex and wipe off all your makeup kids, it’s time for Dallas Green to make you cry again. After two years since Little Hell, Green took the same approach on this album by incorporating a full band on the record. If you’re looking for heartbreak, purpose, and tears, then step on board City & Colour’s The Hurry and the Harm.

The Hurry and the Harm opens with the title track and sets the foundation for the album. It’s the same great City & Colour sound we’re used to. It’s obvious that Green knows what he does works and he executes it effortlessly in this track. He also introduces the whole theme of the album. “Why are we so worried about the hurry, and less about the harm?” In light of the fast-paced YOLO lifestyles, it’s nothing but refreshing to hear an artist that wants people to slow down. To take in potential and opportunity and create a life without regret in a way that doesn’t involve MTV.

And if it’s just a song with me and my guitar, then I’m gonna put a song that’s just me and my guitar on it. It’s really gonna be whatever I feel fits the song best. It’s not going to be an acoustic record and it’s not gonna just be a rock record. It’s gonna be what the song sort of dictates."
