Album Review: Under Spinning Lights - Saturday Night Forever

In recent years, pop-punk has managed to become a hit or miss genre. Producing incredible, ground breaking acts such as Fall Out Boy, The Dangerous Summer and Motion City Soundtrack or producing pure shit like The Maine, Forever the Sickest Kids or NeverShoutNever. From the fading synths of 'Saturday Night Forever', Long Island's Under Spinning Lights attempt to establish themselves as the new faces of pop-punk.

'Saturday Night' contains an infectious chorus which I can't rid myself of, perfect for a Saturday night. It's all very catchy but not something all that original.

The chorus of the next track 'Should've Known (Overwhelming)' reminds me a lot of Bowling for Soup's 'Almost'. The drums sound impressive but the vocal effects are quite annoying. It just seems that there is too much going on, with the synth keys quickly becoming a distraction.

Three songs in and 'Baby Girl Letdown' sounds like a bad, rehashed 3OH!3 song. That says a lot seeing as 3OH!3 have only a handful of creditable.

Finishing off the EP with 'Lights Out' which features a spastic synthesizer in the verse, that you would hear in UK club music but for a band like this, it doesn't work.

The lyrics of this entire EP are quite sub-par. 'Saturday Night Forever' had a potentially strong start but from there on, I heard a rapid decline in quality and consistency. For the most part, Under Spinning Lights are uncomfortable to listen to. Although if they dropped the neon clothes, come up with a new and original "gimmick" that doesn't rip off anyone and then we'll consider talking.

2/5
