Single Review Round-Up: Orphan Boy & Pendulum

This edition of the Single Review Round-Up consists of singles from Orphan Boy and Pendulum.

Orphan Boy - Popsong
Available now on Concrete Recordings.

Manchester-based Orphan Boy preview their 'Passion, Pain and Loyalty' full-length with 'Popsong', a spooky, atmospheric indie pop number that slightly hints at the Arctic Monkeys more psychedelic output. Soft keys provide the backdrop for Rob Cross' introspective Northern tounge, which drifts along with the tracks tempo, one that is dreary and doesn't seem to go anywhere. Whilst there is much emphasis on the groups lyrics, musically they fail to impress and you're left with a pretty dull track.

2/5

Pendulum - Witchcraft
Available now through Earstorm/Warner Bros. Records

UK album chart toppers Pendulum's latest offering opens favourably with a laid-back guitar before bursting through to the bands synth-led chorus. At times it feels like Pendulum repeatedly use the same synth rhythm in every song. Nevertheless Rob Swire's vocals bring a welcomed interlude, as the bands upbeat tempo carries the track along.

Overall 'Witchcraft' is more favourable as it dosn't go down the bands usual drum'n'bass route, instead they combine their dance style with a solid rock base well.
