Album Review: Sharks - Show of Hands

One of the first thoughts from the start of Sharks' debut EP, 'Show Of Hands', is how much James Mattock sounds like The Clash's Joe Strummer, as his vocals have the same attitude and bite of Strummer. 'Trains' is a thriving, gritty through and through punk rock number; a good tempo and great guitar lines are all mixed in with youthful yet mature approach.

'It All Relates' is as equally as powerful, with a thumping beat, subtle grass-roots feel and anthemic chorus made up of "Woah oh oh". Whilst 'Three Houses' on first listen sounds like tour buddies The Gaslight Anthem, with punk rock n roll feel; storming guitar riffs are well-blended with a positive chorus that sees the "Woah oh oh" being used once again.

'More Blue' is a hooky, weighty track that stutters and plods along at a good pace, although it's probably the weakest track here. Whilst the exploding 'Glove In Hand' closes the EP on a high, as Mattock's vocals sound bright and are mixed well with good production that brings out the best of the whole band,especially the superb guitar work.

'Slow of Hands' at times sounds refreshing, as Sharks have taken the best parts of their influences; The Clash, Husker Du and The Buzzcocks and mixed them together to add new life to British punk scene. However it equally sounds nostalgic, but nevertheless 'Slow of Hands' holds up a good level of consistency and keeps your interest from start to finish. With such a mature approach to their young years, it'll be interesting to see how Sharks develop over the coming months.
