Album Review: Daytrader - Last Days Of Rome EP

Midwest American punk has become somewhat of a tired staple of the alternative rock industry, offering a style that has slowly garnered a considerably generic edge and one would be quick to assume that it won't have long to live if it doesn't allow itself to innovate. Well it seems there is proof out there of the inconsistency of this statement: Daytrader, and their confident new EP, 'Last Days Of Rome'.

As far as must-have elements go, Daytrader check every box from mid-tempo palm-muting, to simple melodic guitar lines, raspy vocals and a distinctive Americana tinge. Opening track and most obvious potential single, 'Kill My Compass' headshots every single one of these in glorious fashion, especially with the top-notch tuneful yelling ripping through mellow(ish) riffing. Somewhere amidst the distorsion, one can make out some The Weakerthans and Hot Water Music, which is not something to turn one's back to.

Realistically, Daytrader don't do experimentation, but 'Last Days Of Rome' showcases some of the more distinctively contrasting heavy-soft moments and some classic vocal harmonies, making for a great alt-punk track (even if it's a little longer than you're average accepted punk track). 'Death Means Nothing To Men Like Me' is literally saved by some fantastic vocal work and an unexpected soft turn midway through the song with some colourful bass work.

On the other hand, 'Living' and 'Grey-Coloured Glasses' don't benefit from the same quality as the other three tracks and ultimately, reveal the flaws of the genre even though they're not necessarily bad songs. Overall, Daytrader seem to know who they're aiming at and have no incentive to look anywhere else, and as far as the targets are concerned, no one will care. However, if you're looking for something new and exciting, look elsewhere.

3.5/5
