Album Review: Sucioperro - Reflexes Of The Dead EP

With the release of their third album, 'The Heart String & How To Pull It' looming, Sucioperro prepare the mood with first single 'Reflexes Of The Dead' along with a healthy handful of B-sides, which is a move that is far too overlooked by bands these days.

The main dish here is 'Reflexes Of The Dead', a melodic love song that'll swiftly have you singing the chorus, the verse, and pretty much every lyric Reid unveils. The song lacks some of the hard-hitting alternative rock of their previous releases, but one will no doubt be reminded of Biffy Clyro's stylistic evolution with 2007's 'Puzzle'. If the single is anything to go by, then we're in for a new and exciting side of Sucioperro.

As one would expect from a series of b-sided, the rest of the EP is very unbalanced with three songs ('Puppets', 'We Take Shelter From The Trouble We're In' and 'Finally Found It') flirting with synth-heavy rhythms and repetitive beats. These snippets are short songs, and feel like a bit of fun in the studio which keeps them from bearing down on the whole.

On the other hand, 'Love It When Stevies Dances' is a quaint acoustic number that brings out the signature tasty melodies and vocal workings that Sucioperro are known for. The lyrics are classic JP Reid don't-give-too-much-away and are worth a focused listen. 'Send Away The Wolves' takes the repetitive drumming of the three previously cited songs and unleashes some brilliantly cryptic lyrics. It's the kind of song that would come up in as unexpected fan-favourite b-sides somewhere up the line.

All in all, the EP is all about the main single, and as far as Sucioperro's concerned, this is a smashing tune that will certainly heighten the expectations of the fans and give a taste to newcomers. The b-sides, on the other hand, may have to remain within the fan-only realm. Sucioperro are back, and they're here to win you over.

3.5/5
