Album Review: Shotgun No Blitz - Over It

Any record that opens with the line "I’d call you a slut, but you’d like it too much" has my attention straight away. Lyrically Pennsylvania foursome Shoutgun No Blitz’s EP ‘Over It’ is full of teenage, break up angst that sits well against the backdrop of sing along refrains and choppy guitar riffs.

Hands down, the strongest song on this five track free EP ‘Mouthful’; It doesn’t mess around, it’s punchy and it’s catchy. Although, I did spend half of my time working out if I like it because it’s a decent song in itself of whether it’s just because it reminds me of some of my favourite bands - not necessarily a bad thing. It’s compact pop-punk reminiscent of the likes of The Movielife and The Benjamins.

The influence of early Saves The Day is unavoidable. Back up ‘Over It’ and ‘Through Being Cool’; Saves The Day’s classic second album, and the similarities are unmissable. This has both it’s benefits and handicaps: great job on recreating a much loved record, however Shotgun No Blitz has run the risk of simply recreating something already familiar. It’s early days for the band who have only really come into fruition less than a year ago and are yet to strike a balance between their influences and establishing their own sound.

This is definitely one for fans of early Drive-Thru Records bands, Shotgun No Blitz are making a decent start into their career and with a bit more time they will no doubt grown into their own sound... All in all not a bad way to spend fifteen minutes of your day checking out their EP.
