Album Review: Various Artists - The Emo Diaries - Chapter 12: I Love You But In The End I Will Destroy You

Since 1997, ‘The Emo Diaries’ have introduced, promoted, and captured the best of bands that, in the words of Deep Elm, “possess the ability to stir emotion like no other”. Among the track listings you can find otherwise unreleased songs by bands such as Jimmy Eat World, Penfold, and The Movielife, and it was this exclusivity and knack for picking up new talent which helped establish the compilation as the best of its kind.

Album Review: Summer Hours - Alone Together

This first full-length release from the Brooklyn-based quartet is a burst of bright and refreshing indie pop which feels both effortless and energetic. Singer and bassist Rachel Dannefer’s airy vocals are comparable to those of Mates of State or Lemuria; carrying heartfelt lyrics in a gentle, sweeping manner. In that sense the lyrics are the sentimental axis that the music revolves around, particularly with ‘Sad Song’ and ‘Old Boyfriend’; you can almost hear the sound of rushing waves in the sun-kissed melodies and the clean, choppy guitar riffs, but when you get to the heart of the carefully layered songs, the emotion is not quite as carefree as its delivery.

Album Review: Ride Your Bike - The Connection

'The Connection' is an emotional mid-tempo chord progression fitted with intertwining vocal lines that'll slowly grab you under the sweet sound of cellos. The verses don't crash into distorted guitars and the band make the most of the soft tones of their instruments to create some intelligent hooks and you'll most certainly have trouble getting that chorus out of your head. 'Spark' crosses into rockier Fountains Of Wayne-like territory. The guitars are crunchier, but they don't lose any of the smoothness of their arrangements.
