ATP! Feature: International Women's Day 2015

On March 8th, women’s rights and achievements are globally recognized and celebrated across the world for International Women’s Day.

Since the early 1900s, International Women’s Day has been a movement towards gender equality, including the right to vote, be trained, hold public office and receive better pay. According to the official International Women’s Day website, “The unfortunate fact is that women are still not paid equally to that of their male counterparts, women still are not present in equal numbers in business or politics, and globally women's education, health and the violence against them is worse than that of men. However, great improvements have been made. We do have female astronauts and prime ministers, school girls are welcomed into university, women can work and have a family, women have real choices.”

"This is the thing. I have ADD and I have this company that was a hobby that I built into a real thing," says Tom DeLonge when describing his recently launched company, To The Stars. "We do entertainment stuff, technology stuff and we build brands. I have the ability, which is probably a bad thing, to do a bunch of weird shit however I want. As long as I don't tank it, they are pretty supportive!"

The San Diego native's previous hobby has now expanded into an empire based out of Southern California, which is also home to his other business ventures Macbeth Footwear and Modlife – a technology that creates fan clubs for artists, with an impressive roster spanning from the likes of Pearl Jam to Kanye West to Nine Inch Nails.

Part of the success made in women’s history is in the music industry, where female-fronted bands, female musicians and female songwriters have begun to dominate. From Joan Jett’s all-female band, The Runaways, changing the male-dominated rock genre to Beyoncé releasing a “visual album” without a hint of promotion and selling 80,000 copies in just three hours. Kris Littman, Program Director of Chicago’s Fearless Radio, says, “It is an absolutely wide-open playing field; there are no barriers to what you can [do]… The only limit is your imagination, your creativity; your voice can be heard, your writing can be posted, the audience is there and you just have to be good enough to grab their attention.”

Alter The Press! Presents: Violet

Hailing from Derby in the East Midlands, Violet are a Alternative/Post-Hardcore septet that are currently gathering momentum throughout the UK.

With comparisons to US bands such as Emarosa, Isles and Glaciers, and Chiodos, their latest single, 'Perspectives' sensibly blends stagnant guitars, intense drums and screamo vocals with a favorable melodic tone, courtesy of clean vocalist Jonny Nelson. Ultimately it proves to be a winning combination, and is on par with the aforementioned transatlantic bands.

It's no doubt that Violet's somewhat unique sound will continue to gain attention, as they will be playing shows throughout UK this summer, touring with Hey! Alaska in September, and a new EP later in the year.

For Fans Of: Emarosa, Isles and Glaciers, and A Skylit Drive.

Alter The Press: Why should Alter The Press! readers check you out?

Feature: Tigers Jaw - Indie/Rock's Best Kept Secret?

When people mention Scranton, Pennsylvania, they may well think of Dunder Mifflin, the fictitious company from NBC hit show, The Office, which is set there. This is sure to change in the near future however, as with sold out shows, legions of fans worldwide and limited vinyl pressings already exchanging hands for hundreds of dollars on eBay, Tigers Jaw have already accomplished much in a very short space of time.

Tracks like 'Let's Get Away' are adrenaline-filled, catchy and well-structured. Whereas 'Time To Reflect' and 'Making Conversation' thrive on intricate guitar melodies.

Earlier this year the quartet joined up with The Animal Farm, which led to the band recording new material, as well as forming a partnership with Jack&Jones clothing. The coming months will see the band playing shows throughout the UK, releasing new material and more.

With such a tight and uplifting sound, The Electric Modern are destined for bigger things.

We have an interesting mix of sound; its very melodic, and we love our harmonies, driven bass line and punchy drums. If I had to describe a mix of some artists I would say: The Killers, Bloc Party, White Lies, The Naked and Famous, and Jimmy Eat World that might get you somewhere near our sound. It's the kind of music that, years down the line will take you back to the time you first heard it with fond memories!
