Interview: Luke Leighfield
This week Luke Leighfield begins his Christmas tour, however this isn't your typical tour. For the 15-date trek, Luke will (mostly) be playing in people's living rooms and generally getting in the festive spirit.Alter The Press! recently caught up with piano-playing singer-songwriter to discuss the tour, his future plans, tour essentials and the race for Christmas Number 1.
Alter The Press: First of all Luke, How has 2010 treated you?
Luke Leighfield: It's been good! It kind of feels like it's been slow in terms of Luke Leighfield music stuff because I haven't played as many gigs as previous years, but I've done some cool things like a tour with Jose Vanders and Sam Little, playing main stage at Greenbelt Festival in the summer, a tour of Russia, and I've also written my new album which I'm hoping to record in early 2011. On top of that I've played keys for The King Blues, Futures, Dry the River, Tellison and The Cape Race for various recordings and tours, released a few things on my label Got Got Need Records, and I got engaged to a beautiful lady! So yeah, 2010 has been tip top.

Interview: Luke Leighfield
This week Southampton-based piano-playing singer-songwriter Luke Leighfield is to release his 3rd full-length album, 'Have You Got Heart?'.Since 2006 Leighfield has played hundreds of gigs both at home and abroad, going as far as Russia and China. In addition to this, in 2008 he played at the Latitude Festival and The Great Escape Festival, as well as radio airplay on BBC Radio One, XFM and BBC 6 Music.
This was all done whilst completeing a Degree in English and Music at the University in Southampton, which he completed with 2.1 honours earlier this year.
Alter The Press! recently spoke to Luke about the new album, offering the album as a free download, running his own label, playing shows in China and Russia, being a full-time student and touring musician at the same time and much more.
ATP: So Luke you're just about to release your new album 'Have You Got Heart?' What can we expect from your 3rd album?
Luke: The main difference with this album is that there's a lot more guitar on the record. With the first album I tried to basically use no guitar, and my first foray into having guitar on my music was on my second album. With this album I wanted it to sound pretty rocky so I found a great guitarist and basically made him play wicked stuff all over the album. Apart from that, the production is a lot better than my old albums. Pete Miles did a great job of mixing the ridiculous amount of instruments on the record and it sounds sick. It's just a big more full-on than than the previous albums, but essentially a continuation of what I was already doing.
ATP: I understand 'Have You Got Heart?' has a more grand sound with trumpets, trombones and even a choir being used. Could you expand on this?
L:Well basically it's not a lot different to the instrumentation on my previous albums. However, the difference is that all the brass and strings are kind of used throughout each song, as opposed to just being brought in at the end of tracks to give them epic endings. So the songs are written in more of a full band sense throughout the song, rather than being me playing solo with stuff tacked on top, if that makes sense? As for the choir, it was basically just everyone on the album stuck round a mic singing like rowdy football hooligans.

Luke Leighfield Posts Update
Luke Leighfield has spoke about his plans for 2009 including plans to tour extensively and a third album is set to be released at some point.Luke said the following:
"Happy New Year! 2008 was an incredible year for me. I had the privilege of playing gigs in nine different countries and making so many great new friends in the process. I only started touring the UK properly at the end of 2006, so to find myself in Russia on New Year's Eve two years later is just bewildering but thoroughly wonderful. I'm so grateful to all the support that's been shown to me both at home in the UK, and also in all these new places. To start the year by having a Radio 1 live session broadcast to the whole of the UK, and to end it on tour in a different continent is a massive, massive privilege. I can't wait to see what the future brings.
I finish my degree this June, so this means I can then go on tour forever which is really great. However, it means I have to play very few shows until that time because I have to write a dissertation and other boring things. You'll be pleased to know that I'll also be writing songs for my upcoming third album, which is due to be recorded in July / August, and then released at some point before the end of 2009! I'm really excited about this because I'm going to have a new band, a new person recording the album, and obviously new songs. Get in. It's going to tear your face right off then trample it into the floor.
Once the album is finished, I plan to tour all of Europe, including the lovely UK (it's been too long) before Christmas as a four piece band. In fact, all my shows after the summer will be as a four piece band. More on that soon. Then at the start of 2010 I'll tour Asia for a couple of months, then anywhere else that I can get shows. I really want to go to South America, the US and Australia, but we'll see what happens. Also, this new album will hopefully be released worldwide on a variety of different labels, so more of you should be able to find it in your local record shops, wherever you live.
That's the basic plan for 2009 and beyond. If you can help me in my quest to visit some new countries on tour, no matter where they are and whether it's for venues or house shows, then please send me an email on luke@lukeleighfield.com and we'll try to make it happen. Until then, keep in touch and I'll see you on tour! Thanks as ever for your continued support.
PS - I'm having a big New Year's clearout in my online shop with t-shirts for £5, sweatshirts for £10, and a special offer if you wear large t-shirts where you can get three t-shirts for £10. You get a free A2 poster, postcards and badges with all orders so that's an added bonus. Stocks are extremely limited though so buy now to avoid missing out. I only have about two of every size and design! Check it out here. Thanks a lot!"
