Album Review: The Company We Keep - S/T EP

The Company We Keep is part side-project, part launching-pad for vocalist Amy Brennan, who was discovered by former The Receiving End of Sirens member Brian Southall after he saw her YouTube cover videos. Southall is the driving force behind the band, and he was able to recruit Justin Pierre from Motion City Soundtrack into the group from his current position as MCS’s tour manager. The music is Southall’s, the lyrics Pierre’s and the voice Brennan’s - Misery Signal’s drummer Branden Morgan fills in behind the set.

This three track offering features two originals and a re-imagining of the At The Drive-in song, "Pattern Against User". The Company We Keep offer an industrial-tinged pop-rock, with glitchy electronics, angular melodies and Brennan’s Amy Lee-inspired vocal work. It results in a slightly confused effort, though.

Album Review: Letterday - The Company We Keep EP

Boston, MA's Letterday showcase tight, upbeat pop-punk on this free 3-track EP, 'The Company We Keep'. 'Confessions of a Serial Crusher' starts off with sharp, power chords before bursting into a fast beat and all-out rocking guitars. The adrenaline-filled tracks starts off the EP on a high note and is fun and enjoyable to listen to; standard yet good pop-punk stuff.

'Bleed' keeps up the momentum with its speedy rhythm and energetic performance. Add to this thumping drums and driving bass line, that controls the track and rounds it off overall.

Closing track, 'With You' is a slightly slower song with a chorus that will have you joining in instantly. The use of soft keys and electronic in the middle to the track and shows Letterday are a band to try something different once in awhile.

Letterday might not be the next big thing but what they do is credible and enjoyable to listen to. 'The Company We Keep EP' is standard pop-punk music, that you can just sit back and enjoy.

3/5
