ATP! Album Review: Motion City Soundtrack - Making Moves EP

This three-track release marks the latest installment of the ‘Making Moves’ series of EP's, which has seen Drexel University’s MAD Dragon Records team up with Motion City Soundtrack’s own Boombox Generation label to put out EP's from emerging artists. This sixth edition sees a release from the band themselves, comprising of two original tracks and a cover of Rilo Kiley’s ‘Pictures of Success’.

Opening track ‘Severance’ is not exactly what one has come to expect from Motion City Soundtrack: much more laid back than their usual wide-eyed and wired fare, the track is allowed to more room to breathe than the band's usual output. Justin Pierre’s vocals are as beautiful as ever, considered and emotional before growing as the track blooms to a rousing finale. Originally intended to be included on the bands’ recent LP "Go", the track warrants its inclusion on a separate EP, sufficiently different to previous material without defaulting on quality.

Motion City Soundtrack Release "True Romance" Music Video

Album Review: Motion City Soundtrack - Go

Where do we even begin with Motion City Soundtrack? Over their 10 year lifespan, they've released four completely different sounding albums, each one developing upon their unique blend of power-pop and pop-punk that they fashioned on their debut album, "I Am the Movie" and each one criminally underrated. "Go" (which also means five in Japanese) marks the bands return to indie behemoths Epitaph records after their prior effort "My Dinosaur Life" saw a release on Columbia Records and was critically acclaimed as their best and most passionate album to date.

Frontman Justin Pierre's lyrics have only evolved over time, his use of austere words in retelling intensely autobiographical situations such as "True Romance", a nod to Quentin Tarantino's film of the same name, where Pierre describes himself as "a screw up of epic proportions, a walking hand grenade", his self loathing lyrics are completely contradicted by the upbeat acoustic guitar strums and the captivatingly infectious chorus. The sound of these songs doesn't feel too dissimilar to Pierre's side-project Farewell Continental, "Son of Gun" in particular features Pierre's best Stephen Malkmus impression but still manage to include the pop sensibilities of a regular Motion City Soundtrack song with Pierre even reaching new heights of falsetto in the chorus.

Album Review: The Company We Keep - S/T EP

The Company We Keep is part side-project, part launching-pad for vocalist Amy Brennan, who was discovered by former The Receiving End of Sirens member Brian Southall after he saw her YouTube cover videos. Southall is the driving force behind the band, and he was able to recruit Justin Pierre from Motion City Soundtrack into the group from his current position as MCS’s tour manager. The music is Southall’s, the lyrics Pierre’s and the voice Brennan’s - Misery Signal’s drummer Branden Morgan fills in behind the set.

This three track offering features two originals and a re-imagining of the At The Drive-in song, "Pattern Against User". The Company We Keep offer an industrial-tinged pop-rock, with glitchy electronics, angular melodies and Brennan’s Amy Lee-inspired vocal work. It results in a slightly confused effort, though.
