Album Review: Goodtime Boys - Are We Now, Or Have We Ever Been EP

As far as EP’s go, Tangled Talk has been hitting them out of the ball park recently, partly with thanks Lewis Johns, whose production skills have a remarkable way of capturing the essence of a band within a limited time period. Although Goodtime Boys are still in their infancy in terms of releases, constant touring since the beginning of 2010 has helped shape their sound into something fresh, strong in identity, and bipolar in temperament.

Swinging vigorously between frantic aggression and bleak fragility, each track on ‘Are We Now...’ is layered with tension. Rolling smoothly between heavy instrumentation and patient pauses, Goodtime Boys have a well crafted and distinct sound that hits as hard as Converge with the delicate musicianship of This Will Destroy You. Pushed along by intricate drumming, even their most atmospheric moments tremble with palpable energy that refuses to fall flat.

Album Review: Tangled Hair - Apples

Out of the disbanding of much loved math sensation Colour, drummer James Trood and lead singer Alan Welsh formed Tangled Hair back in 2009. Since the release of their first EP, aptly named ‘First’ they have got themselves a new member in the form of bassist Alex Lloyd and 15 months on released ‘Apples’, a neat display of sheer instrumental and song writing prowess in the form of a 5-track EP.

There’s no messing around with opener ‘I’m Calmer Than You’, the group bellow out “Arghhhhhh” and burst into a volatile track, which simmers and crashes, never gathering a foothold on any given tempo. The time signatures throughout the EP are complex and unstable, heavily led by the drum machine that is James Trood, who powers through with off kilter rhythms that almost stray off into incomprehensible realms.

Live Review: Tall Ships, Men, Tangled Hair - Old Blue Last, London - 13/6/2010

A Sunday night rarely sees many people heading out for gigs, especially with a World Cup match kicking off at 7.30. But tonight was different, by the time Tangled Hair came on stage Old Blue Last was nearing capacity for tonight’s free show put on by BSM records.

After giving the news that James Trood behind the drum kit was very ill, it was a mystery how he managed to get through the set, the whole time looking like he was either going to be sick or actually drop dead at any second. But illness aside the stand-out part of this band is the absolute beat machine that is Trood, leading with heavily complicated and intricate rhythms. The instrumental sections are where the band shines, delivering a melodic and more mature taste of British math pop.
