Album Review: Viva Sleep - The House Of Viva Sleep

From the house of Walnut Tree comes Viva Sleep and their debut release 'The House of Viva Sleep', a seven track blend of British contemporary rock mixed with a subtle US tone. A lively start is seen on 'Cast Out The Demons' with its driving guitars, that at times dominate but do not distract from Neil Kennedy's vocals.

Whilst 'Adonis Strike A Pose' has a complex guitar hidden underneath a crazy drum pattern that slides into a pleasant blend of melodies and passionate vocals in the middle. The same can be said for 'In Front Of Lions', with Kennedy's vocals once again coming out on top as he battles against the bands instruments.

'A Bitch Is Worth A Thousand Words' continues the upbeat tone of the album and proves to be the highlight of the album, with its memorable chorus and strong structure. From there are in the record sets into mediocre territory, tracks like 'Orchids' and 'Ship Of Fools' aren't terrible yet not great, although they add a sense of consistency to the record.

In a way I wanted to really like Viva Sleep, as their whole sound is reminiscent of Hundred Reasons and do have some good ideas throughout. However unfortunately 'The House Of Viva Sleep' doesn't quite hit all the right spots (sorry Tom). Although for a debut EP, the Southampton group have set a good foundation to build on and with the backing of a label like Walnut Tree, they have the possibility to take the next step in their career.
