Album Review: Rob Lynch - Rob Lynch EP
The ever brilliant ears over at Walnut Tree Records have done it again; Rob Lynch (formerly Lost On Campus) has released an EP, that has delivered on a big scale with the potential that he’s been tagged with for the past couple of years.
Kicking things off with ‘Hawking,’ you can tell straight away that the quality is a real step up from his previous releases. There is an ever so slight Frank Turner vibe, not enough to call it a rip off, but enough to see that there is an influence there, more noticeably in the chorus, where you can easily envisage a room full of people singing along.

Album Review: Cuba Cuba - Where Else Is Safe But The Road?
There’s something in the water over at Walnut Tree Records, it seems that every release they bring out recently is absolutely outstanding, and now it’s the turn of South Wales’ own Cuba Cuba to keep up that momentum.Things get started with “Building Blocks” a nice enough opener that leads into quite possibly the stand out track of the album “Fifty A Night” a song that has a hook so brilliant you’ll have it in your head for days while “Outlines” does the complete opposite and hits you with a barrage of noise that’ll leave you feeling as if you’ve received an assault on your senses, in a good way of course.

Album Review: City Light Thief - Laviin
Hailing from Cologne, Germany, five piece Post-Hardcore lot, City Light Thief have released a debut album that is packed with hooks, massive chorus’ and brilliant musicianship. As soon as 'Driftwood' hits, you’re confronted with front man Benni’s distinctive vocals and the outro to 'Golden Roots' is an absolute delight as you head further into the album, the influences that City Light Thief have taken on board are pretty clear, there are massive elements of the likes of The Fall Of Troy and Thursday with the former being more noticeable.
ATP! Label Profile: Walnut Tree Records
Walnut Tree Records is a label we've had a mutual respect for for quite some time here at Alter The Press! Since forming four years ago, label owner Tom Beck still runs the label by himself and during this time Walnut Tree Records has developed and established up and coming UK bands such as Tiger Please, Cuba Cuba and more recently Gunning For Tamar. In addition Beck's unique and independent approach has led to such creations as The Secret Treehouse Singles Club, which saw the label releasing six limited edition singles over a six week period. The label's hard work has led to Walnut Tree Records becoming one of the most respectable independent labels in the UK.

Album Review: Gunning For Tamar - Deaf Cow Motel
Walnut Tree Records, despite its seemingly diminutive stature, is fast becoming home to some of the UK and Europe’s brightest and freshest talent. Having somewhat of a Midas touch, the label’s head Tom Beck, only works with brilliant bands it seems, and par for course, Gunning For Tamar, one of the labels newer acquisitions, are brilliant. ‘Deaf Cow Motel’ is this Oxford based four-piece’s second release proper, but their relative inexperience really doesn’t show. The EP’s four tracks are fluid, professional and display the band’s capability as musicians brilliantly. Sounding like a stoically English Biffy Clyro re-interpreting the soundscapes of Incubus, ‘Deaf Cow Motel’ really is a release to get excited about. The rhythmic drumming of D’arcy King is infused throughout opening track ‘German Treasure Island’ and gives the track its abounding energy. Akin to something you might hear on a bad techno record at the tracks start, it’s not long before the beats transform into the lifeblood of the track, keeping its flow and allowing the track to twist and turn freely. Like the majority of the EP, the song is huge. Vocalist, Joe Wallis sounds like a more anglicised Brandon Boyd during the opening half of the track, but soon establishes his own unique voice, singing "I’ll wear my chains, if you tie your wings" with a real sense of emotive purpose.

Interview: Tom Beck (of Walnut Tree Records)
Earlier this month UK independent label, Walnut Tree Records launched a new singles club called 'The Secret Treehouse', which sees the label releasing six limited edition singles over a six week period. Following on from well-received releases from Tiger Please, Cuba Cuba, Burn The Fleet, Bayonets and Portman, 'The Secret Treehouse' sees WTR producing releases from six new bands; The Maple State, Day Of Rising, Call Me Ishmael, Delta/Alaska, Newlands and Ghostlines.WTR's label owner Tom Beck recently spoke to Alter The Press to discuss how "The Secret Treehouse" came together, the six bands included in the series, the single format and more.
Alter The Press: For those who haven't heard about it, could you tell us what 'The Secret Treehouse' is?
Tom Beck: The Secret Treehouse is my six part physical singles club - it features six hand made releases that I'm putting out the six weeks between November 1st and December 6th. The bands involved are Delta/Alaska, Call Me Ishmael, Day Of Rising, The Maple State, Newlands and Ghostlines. The releases are all from unsigned bands and are limited to 100 and being sent with an exclusive badge and postcard for each band. Those who subscribe will also be sent a handmade zine featuring interviews with the bands, so it's easier to get to know the people behind the music.
ATP: What are the main reasons for doing the singles club?
TB: I wanted to start working with some of the many demos or submissions I'm sent, but there is no way I could do this as a full release each time. So the idea was to test the waters with the bands, and see whether anything more could work out. Keeping the copies limited to 100 meant that there hasn't been as much of a risk for me or a pressure to sell so many copies as usual. I turned it into a club so I could have a running theme with the artwork.
I enjoy being creative with my releases too and I thought this would be a good chance for me to try out a few ideas - such as the stencils and spray paint for the front covers. It's much more rewarding for me than just sending the parts to a production company and they sending back the pressed cd.
