Album Review: The Get Up Kids - Simple Science

Admittedly it's hard not to be bias when reviewing one of your favourite band's newest material. However when said band has been on hiatus for four or so years, a sense of scepticism comes into play. 'Simple Science' is The Get Up Kids returning EP and one that quickly feels like the band haven't been away at all in the 6 years that's passed since 2004's 'Guilt Show'.

'Your Petty Pretty Things' sets the tone perfectly with its "classic" Get Up Kids sound, one that is upbeat yet sincere, especially Matt Pryor's vocal delivery. In some ways it picks up where 'Guilt Show' left off and wouldn't feel out of place on the latter. It is instantly favourable and a great way to start off the EP.

The bass-heavy 'Keith Case' is gritty and is held back from the band's somewhat deep sound, that threatens to break out from its shackles throughout. When it finally does Pryor's voice stands out proudly and after a few listens will have you singing back. Add to this a superb rhythm section from Rob and Ryan Pope, and you're left with an EP highlight.

'Tommy Gentle' is next and everything you want and expect from The Get Up Kids; bright, passionate and overall pleasing. Although with 3 stronger tracks, it's goodness is somewhat diminished.

'How You're Bound' once again sees the band making use of drum machines and basically being experimental. Like 'Guilt Show''s 'Is There A Way Out?'; a slow build-up made up of Pryor's captivating voice, soft keys from James Dewees and distant guitar notes and leading drum machine, which for the best part of six minutes does not go anywhere. It's moody and to an extent daring for a band like The Get Up Kids, but the band pull it off well and admirable.

'Simple Science' ends being an ideal release for the band and the position they're in; "veterans" in the so-called 'scene'. They're able to show they are able to move on from former glory's but not to the point where they sound like a different band altogether. On top of this, the band still sound fresh and it could be considered their break was well-deserved, as on a whole they sound reinvigorated and hungry again.

The ending result is that all scepticism is thrown out the window, as The Get Up Kids are welcomed back with open arms.
