Album Review: The Get Up Kids - Simple Science

Admittedly it's hard not to be bias when reviewing one of your favourite band's newest material. However when said band has been on hiatus for four or so years, a sense of scepticism comes into play. 'Simple Science' is The Get Up Kids returning EP and one that quickly feels like the band haven't been away at all in the 6 years that's passed since 2004's 'Guilt Show'.

'Your Petty Pretty Things' sets the tone perfectly with its "classic" Get Up Kids sound, one that is upbeat yet sincere, especially Matt Pryor's vocal delivery. In some ways it picks up where 'Guilt Show' left off and wouldn't feel out of place on the latter. It is instantly favourable and a great way to start off the EP.

The bass-heavy 'Keith Case' is gritty and is held back from the band's somewhat deep sound, that threatens to break out from its shackles throughout. When it finally does Pryor's voice stands out proudly and after a few listens will have you singing back. Add to this a superb rhythm section from Rob and Ryan Pope, and you're left with an EP highlight.
