After first hinting at health issues late last year in an exchange with a fan on social media, Avril Lavigne is opening up about what was ailing her. In the new issue of People, Lavigne confirms that she was diagnosed with Lyme disease.

In the lead up to the diagnosis, doctors couldn't figure out what was wrong with her even though she thinks she was bit by a tick in spring 2014. She found out she had Lyme disease after a birthday trip to Las Vegas last October during which she didn't feel like herself. "I had no idea a bug bite could do this," she says in the issue. "I was bedridden for five months."

Avril Lavigne is suffering from an undisclosed health issue, and reportedly asked a fan to “keep me in your prayers” during an exchange over the weekend.

The pop/rock star did not specify the illness from which she is suffering, and has yet to release a statement.

But sometimes, he says, it's less hilarious. "My family members hear this stuff … and then they call me up very concerned."

Avril Lavigne is currently touring across South America on her 30-date jaunt.

For select shows, the "Hello Kitty" singer has been giving fans the option to purchase "Meet and Greet" tickets ($400, not including a ticket to the actual concert) to take a photo with her.

According to Gawker, fans aren't allowed to touch or hug Avril, and are required to stand at least arm's length away from her.
