ATP! Gallery/Review: Finch - "What It Is To Burn" 10th Anniversary Tour (Philadelphia, PA)

Breaking up is hard to do, and for some people it doesn’t always mean forever. All good things must come to an end but that doesn’t mean you can’t get a little bit nostalgic and dig up the time capsule you buried in the ground, say, ten years ago. In 2002, Temecula CA five-piece Finch released their debut record What It Is To Burn on then seemingly booming independent record label, Drive-Thru Records. The record went on to be a hit, even making it on to the Billboard charts.

Ten Years On: Finch

“Never say never” is a high risk, high reward way to live. For Finch, that fluidity and flexibly has lead to lineup changes, two hiatuses and a breakup. It also led to a bit of controversy when they put out a new record that didn’t sound exactly like their first full-length, What It Is To Burn, and, as is the nature of the beast these days, a place on the rosters of one of the most successful indie labels (Drive-Thru) and largest major labels (MCA).

But “never say never” is also the reason Finch were able to gather (most of) their original members a decade after What It Is To Burn – the album that, for many, defines the band – and start touring again. A decade on, they’ve decided to come together to give fans the ultimate listening experience of such a monumental record. Lead guitarist Randy 'R2K' Strohmeyer spoke with Alter The Press about the tour, growing up, and how he never imagined this is where he’d be today. But hey, never say never.

Finch Call It A Day

Finch have announced they have broken up.

The band made the following statement:

"Over the past few years we have collectively gone insane trying to achieve the common goal of writing our new record. It's become obvious to all of us that the thing that made Finch such a special band to be in, was also the key ingredient that was tearing us apart. As we get older and broaden our musical pallets, we are all on separate planets drifting further and further out of orbit. Finch is our sun, it has given us everything that we have. This year our sun imploded. Although we travel through darkness. It's comforting to know that we are all still friends. Together floating in the unknown. We want to thank you for your undying love and support of our band. Without you, accomplishing our wildest dreams would not have been possible. We apologize deeply for letting you down. Please forgive us and please keep listening to Finch."
