Album Review: Sleeping With Sirens - "If You Were A Movie, This Would Be Your Soundtrack" EP

Post-hardcore band Sleeping With Sirens has had fans waiting patiently for the release of their acoustic EP since it was announced in December 2011. As the months passed, details came to light, such as the title, release date and the track listing. Finally, a mere six months later, fans can sink their teeth into the surprising release.

"If You Were A Movie, This Would Be Your Soundtrack" boasts five tracks — three reworked tracks and two new ones— set to act as five different scenes in this concept EP based on, you guessed it, your life “movie.” Opening with a fan favorite (though with
shortened title) “James Dean & Audrey Hepburn” sets the tone for the following four songs, showing that acoustic guitar and Kellin Quinn’s airy light vocals are the main focus of this release.

Album Review: Sharks - No Gods

There are no truly original bands anymore. At least that’s what some would have you believe, while pointing to bands that do a great job of aping their heroes as evidence. This is undoubtedly an accusation that was leveled at Sharks for a while, seeing as much of their early material was very Clash-lite. However, things may well change with the release of "No Gods", the band’s debut full length, which sees the band stepping out into new territory.

It’s clear from the outset that the band's touring experience and exposure to so many established bands (having supported everyone from Gallows to The Gaslight Anthem), has had a positive effect on their approach to making music. "Til The Wonders Rise" is a brilliant little opening number that immediately demonstrates that the band have stepped away from their punk sound of old; the tone of the guitar is much more polished, and frontman James Mattock’s vocal delivery is much less abrasive. In fact Sharks seem very much to be taking a leaf out of Gaslight Anthem’s book, smoothing off the Clash Worship in order to reach a wider audience, and on the whole it works.

ATP! Acoustic Session: Transit

Alter The Press recently caught up with Boston, MA's favorite indie/pop-punk outfit, Transit to record a new acoustic session.

The band performed the tracks, "Skipping Stone" and "You Can't Miss It"; both taken from their stunning 2011 album, "Listen & Forgive".

Interview: Daytrader

Alter The Press recently spoke to Gary Cioni of Daytrader to talk about the band's forthcoming new album, signing to Rise Records, working with producer Mike Sapone and more.

Alter The Press: How was the recent "Pop Punk The Vote Tour" for you guys?
Gary Cioni (guitar): The tour was amazing, could not have asked for better shows and a better group of guy's to be on tour with.

ATP: You recently finished recording your debut album. How would you describe the new material in comparison to the "Last Days Of Rome" EP?
Gary: The album is a wider spectrum of sounds that the EP, it's just got more of everything.

ATP: How was it working with producer Mike Sapone again? Was it a completely different experience with him for when you were with Crime In Stereo?
Gary: Working with Mike was amazing, he really pushes you as an artist to explore all angles of your creativity and expand your potential sound. I would say it was definitely a different experience as every record tends to be a unique experience of its own.

Album Review: Cheap Girls - Giant Orange

This time last year Rise Records was primarily known for being home to some of the best metalcore bands in the genre, twelve months later the face of the label has changed completely. Key signings such as Make Do And Mend, Daytrader and heavyweights Hot Water Music, means Rise Records is now just the home of good music, period. Needless to say some of the labels latest acquisitions didn’t go down well with the label ‘faithfuls’ and perhaps the most derided of them all were Michigan natives Cheap Girls. Widely adored by the punk scene however, their previous two releases have been showered in praise, but the “everyday guy” look of the band and lack of “beatdowns” mean they just aren’t “in”. But who cares? It’s about the music, and "Giant Orange" is full of brilliant, catchy music.

"Giant Orange" is the embodiment of that late-90’s college rock sound, from Ian Graham’s Caterer-aping vocals to the distinctive distortion of Adam Aymor’s guitarwork. There isn’t much of an overall departure in sound from their previous two albums, but there is a noticeable difference in the production. Despite the fact that Tom Gabel is once again at the helm, the rawness of previous efforts has been rounded off. This won’t be to everyone’s approval, but it works as it allows for the bands pop tendencies to really shine through. Tracks like the brilliant "Communication Blues" would have lost some of their magic had the old production values still applied.
