ATP! Live Review: Slam Dunk Festival 2014 (Leeds, UK)

Over the years, Slam Dunk Festival has grown in the UK to be something of the Holy Grail of music events in the country. From its relatively humble beginnings in Leeds back in 2006 as a pop-punk/ska event, which included big names like Fall Out Boy but on a smaller scale, Slam Dunk has grown to cater to everyone from pop/rock kids to metalheads. As a result, it's featured everyone from Paramore (before they were huge), to All Time Low, You Me At Six and literally hundreds more.

Despite the nation's relatively small size when compared to the US, the phenomenon has expanded in recent years to include several cities, all in relatively close proximity to one another. This is definitely in fitting with demand; and even this year's poor weather didn't stop fans attending in their droves. For 2014, the holiday weekend saw the famous Slam Dunk diversify its genres somewhat and cover its respective North date in Leeds, South date in Hatfield near London and Midlands date in Wolverhampton in style, as always. Acts from both sides of the pond were out to impress and it was evident in each of their performances. This is what went down at the (original, and best) Leeds University Union date this year…

Live Review: Slam Dunk Festival 2011 - Leeds University, Leeds & Hatfield University, Herfordshire - 28/6/2011 & 29/6/2011

The annual Slam Dunk Festival for many has become a must-see and year after year the anticipation grows. 2011 is no different with over 50 acts spread across seven stages, fans are spoiled for choice with a mix of emerging UK and US bands and established bands making their mark all over the festival. For many its impossible to see everyone they want to, but here at Alter The Press! we did our best to cover the festival as best as possible, with writers at both sites; Leeds and Hatfield. In addition we also covered Slam Dunk Birmingham and Slam Dunk By The Sea.

Much like last year's event, Slam Dunk once again showed why its one of the best UK alternative festivals with its wide variety and clear understanding of what is happening in the current music scene, with vast line-up covering hardcore, pop-punk, rock, ska punk, hip-hop and even dubstep.

Live Review: Slam Dunk Birmingham - The HMV Institute, Birmingham - 30/05/2011‏

Being a spin-off show from the two main Slam Dunk events, the queue for Birmingham date of Slam Dunk lead round the corner to the other end of the road; perhaps the largest queue that the HMV Institute has had since its recent opening late last year and this not even being a sell out show. Despite not announcing stage times at all prior to the show, people were very clear with the intention of who they wanted to see at this all-star event.

Having only just arrived to catch the last song of Failsafe's set, the main room is packed considering how unknown they are. Set Your Goals charm the audience into the first circle pit of the night with 'Fallen' from their second album 'This Will Be the Death Of Us', their newest effort 'Exit Summer' from their upcoming album translates well despite the sudden change of pace for the night. For the close of their set 'Mutiny', they bring an injured kid up on stage who squanders across the stage, ensuing hilarity and turning him into a legend for the night. Meanwhile, in the temple, All or Nothing are benefiting from the huge crowd that left Set Your Goals, they play personal favourite 'A Day at the Stadium' alongside newer efforts from their upcoming debut album. Since my last review of All or Nothing, their sound is a lot more refined and the band are a lot more charming, throwing cans of Carlsberg to anyone in the crowd that fancied one, I'd like to meet the person who has a complaint with that.

Live Review: Slam Dunk By The Sea, Guildhall, Southampton - 31/5/11

Due to a combination of the interesting band order and crazily early doors I arrived just in time to see Goldfinger take the stage, having missed Set Your Goals. (Who has a 6pm doors on a school night?!) The Californian punk legends played an almost identical set to that at the other previous Slam Dunk shows - even down to the between-song banter. However, unlike at Slam Dunk South there were no generator issues and the band went on to blast out the usual crowdpleasers like 'Superman', 'Here In Your Bedroom' and 'Open Your Eyes'.

It’s really hard to be positive about Anti Flag when they’re so negative as a band. Sure Goldfinger have their activist ways and a message to spread but thankfully it’s not so in-your-face as Anti Flag. They did, however, played a strong set of songs including 'Turncoat' and 'Die For Your Government' and a cover of The Clash’s 'Should I Stay Or Should I Go' that the fans seemed to love, but did little to win over the passing spectator with their preaching. Let’s be honest, “You’re gonna die for your country, that’s shit” aren’t exactly profoundly eloquent lyrics are they?
