The Banner Officially Brake Up

The Banner have said they are officially calling it a day but will play some shows and release an EP before the end of 2010.

Front man, Joey Southside made the following statement:

"Alright as im sure you may have guessed The Banner is embarking on our Swan song. Theres no drama or nothing its just we pretty much did everything i wished to do and id like to bow out as gracefully as we are capable (yeah, i know, but for us this is as graceful as youre gonna get.) Were gonna play a last show at the end of the year. im not sure of exactly when someone could nail down a start date of this band but it was 1999-2000 so the end of 2010 will be at least ten years and ten years/6 records is something i can move on feeling ok about.

So before the end of the year were gonna play other shows around the area and do a few things so i can square away the lingering financial obligations and make a clean break.

The Banner to go on hiatus?

Vocalist Joey Southside of New Jersey hardcore punk band, The Banner, has suggested in a recent blog that the band will be not producing anything anytime soon:

'Unfortunately it seems like The Banner for the time being wont be producing too much. The last incarnation of the band was pretty much the only real lineup ive ever felt any connection too and for the time being those guys are all off doing a bunch of different projects that demand their time. Rich and Jake are doing Valens, Rich is also doing
chokepoint and rattling cages and i think buzz is doing webpages and Pellinore, and Paul is being super husband and playing drums with Jerk City. I really dont feel like doing Banner stuff without them so until we can all get together no new material for a bit on that horizon. Shows? Who knows, maybe.'

ATP's ROTY: #2 The Banner - Frailty

Coming in at number two was the latest installment from one of the best hardcore punk bands to ever come out of New Jersey, The Banner.

'Frailty' is the bands best record to date. It showed the bands metal influences but still stuck to their hardcore punk roots at the same time.

I managed to speak to frontman Joey Southside recently who told me how 2008 was for him and what we can expect next year from The Banner:

Alter The Press: How would you describe 2008 for The Banner?

Joey Southside: I suppose it was great due to the release of Frailty. We toured the whole summer but the end of that sucked due to sheisty people, bad communications and a lack of help. Still bad touring is better than good work.

ATP: Your first trip back to the UK since 2006, how was it?

JS: Amazing. I love the UK. Especially London, Manchester and Bournemouth.

ATP: Would you say 'Frailty' is The Banner's best record to date?

JS: Without question.

ATP: Who's choice to press 'Frailty' on vinyl?

JS: I begged. I also begged for 'Each Breath Haunting' on vinyl but I think thats only close to happening now.

ATP: What does 2009 hold for The Banner?

JS: Well "The Banner" as the touring entity is essentially finished. Im not saying i wont take a really good tour if offered but being the kind of band we are and the amount of kids into it. Its really just impossible to keep touring at any full clip. Unfortunately we dont get offered too many tours where I think we might really reach an audience that might be into us and at this point in the game its pretty much moot. We will be releasing more music as EPs and playing locally and day trips occasionally but its time for the next thing.

Interview: The Banner - 29/10/08

Matt managed to catch up with a vocalist Joey Southside from The Banner before their set at the Kingston Fighting Cocks.

Joey talks about the UK, the new record, his upcoming comic book with Frank Iero from My Chemical Romance, his passion for hardcore/punk and more.

This could be one of the most in depth interviews we've done.

Review: The Banner - Kingston Fighting Cocks - 29/10/08

Its been a two year wait, but The Banner have finally made it back to the UK. Tonight's stop is The Fighting Cocks in Kingston, a small 80 capacity room at the back of a pub. It's small, intimate and the perfect place for a hardcore show.

As soon as The Banner hit the stage with 'Venom and Hope', the New Jersey five piece give it their all. Spending most of the time of their set performing in the crowd, the hardcore kids get completely into it. Despite the fact Joey's voice is going and has busted his lip on the microphone, this doesn't stop him for putting on an incredible live set. We hear a mixture of tracks for all their records, to hear new track 'The Wolf' live is something everyone needs to see for themselves. After a short 25-30 minute set, the band close the set by telling the crowd, 'if you like what you hear, message us and we'll send you all of our albums for free' when launching into 'Funerals'.

The Banner are possibly one of the best hardcore punk bands going. They are not making music to make money or be the biggest band in the world. They are not trying to be huge rock stars, its their life. New Jersey hardcore doesn't get any better then this.
