Album Review: Talons - Hollow Realm
Within a few minutes of the first listen, ‘Hollow Realm’ positively positions itself as a re-assessment of the post-rock genre as a whole. Indeed, Talons’ debut album is not only a shining beacon alight with proof of their talent, but also a fresh breath of air into the territory so commonly dominated by swooping atmospherics and tributes to sludge metal. From the melodic and overlapping feedback of ‘St. Mary Will Be The Death Of Us All’ to the crushing wall of sound and emotion that closes the album with ‘Hollow Depth’, Talons prove that they have come up with a distinctive sound that is both innovative and exciting. Inherently rhythmic, sometimes melodic and always challenging, Talons’ sound comes off best on tracks like ‘In The Shadows Of Our Stilted Homes’, ‘Impala’ and ‘Iris’ where the different elements are provided with superb balance.

Live Review: This Will Destroy You, Talons and eaststrikewest - Camden Underworld, London - 30/09/2010
Instrumental bands are becoming ever more prevalent, and with them they carry the unique ability to bury their way into your soul and disrupt it furiously. A simple chord change can somehow move you to contented introspection, reduce you to tears, and then terrify you completely. With that in mind, was there ever a more befitting venue to house an all ambient post-rock line up than Camden Underworld, situated beneath sister pub The World’s End? “Underworld” isn’t just a clever name with alt. Connotation; the venue is genuinely made from 90% shadow.London-based six piece eaststrikewest open the night, and have the defining factor of being the only band on the line-up that comes bearing vocals. Their fusion of ambient and pop elements produces moving songs without ever being weighed down under a crescendo of distortion. Talons come next, filling the room with their original theatrical arrangements, complete with harmonised violins. Through both sets, the crowd sit kneecap to kneecap on the floor, swaying lazily like boats on water, waiting for the tempest.

Album Review: Talons/Noumenon - Split
Last time I heard Talons, they had a heavenly, soft post-rock sound. Now on Big Scary Records, the Hereford group have managed to find space to ideal heavy guitar parts to an otherwise prime example of post-rock. 'Anthropods' is dominated by pounding drums and dramatic strings.Chicago's Noumenon leans more towards the more conventional BSM sound; if there is one. 'Pimpin Zenith Part II’ is a deep, experimental and instrumental number with a hint of mathcore. Although the bands build up leads to a somewhat "normal" breakdown in the middle, the conclusion is one that is complex and messy.
