Album Review: Violent Soho - Violent Soho

Australia's Violent Soho showcase a scrappy, dirty rock sound with this self-titled effort. Luke Boerdam screams his way through the opening moments of 'Here Be Dragons', whilst the bands early 90's alt-rock tone, provides a somewhat favourable nostalgic tone. Whilst lead-off single 'Jesus Stole My Girlfriend' continues the bands scrappy, rugged sound that wallows into pure teenage angst.

Elsewhere 'Son Of Sam' and 'Generation' are reminiscent of fellow countrymen The Vines or Nirvana, as the former is a fast, chaotic grunge-filled number with Boerdam's raw vocals fitting the bands sound. In a similar fashion, 'Generation' shows the bands potential as a rock radio band, with a simple, anthemic chorus line; "This is my generation". Although not original, its effective and gives the band a bit more variation.

The Gaslight Anthem - The Diamond Church Street Choir/Boxer
Released August 9th

New Jersey's The Gaslight Anthem treat fans to a double A-side with 'The Diamond Church Street Choir'/'Boxer'. Both tracks are taken from the bands recent 'American Slang' record. The former track is a blues-y number, with a struttering guitar that calmly builds up to chilled out chorus, which allows Brian Fallon's words to stand out.

Whilst 'Boxer' is The Gaslight Anthem we know and love; feel-good, punk rock-inspired rock and roll. Driven by clever guitar work and Fallon's storytelling style, its the more favourable then the first track. Nevertheless give an accurate impression of the band and their latest full-length.

Introducing: Violent Soho

Violent Soho is an Australian punk-grunge band hailing from Brisbane's suburb of Mansfield, who has a unique sound with raging riffs, battering-ram guitars, vocals obscured by haze and distortion, and a rhythm section so powerful it threatens to flatten buildings. Luke Boerdam (Vocals, Guitar), James Tidswell (Guitar), Luke Henery (Bass), and Michael Richards (Drums) came together half a decade ago to make music that would embrace an 80's and 90's punk-grunge sound.

Since the release of their first full length, We Don't Belong Here, Violent Soho has toured extensively and has played shows with bands such as The Grates, The Black Keys, The Bronx, as well as played shows in the US and UK. They have also been featured in major music festivals around Australia including Homebake, Meredith, Falls Festival, and Laneway Festival.

Their full length debut album is expected to be released in early 2010, on Ecstatic Peace / Universal.
