Single Review Round-Up: We Are Enfant Terrible, Vessels and Little Fish

We Are Enfant Terrible - Wild Child/Flesh 'n' Blood Kids
Released on December 6th through Last Gang Records.

I'll admit French electro-pop isn't something we mention much of on this site, if at all. We Are Enfant Terrible are the kinda act that some "hipsters" would be raving about and be labelling as the one of the underground acts of 2010. Thankfully that's not us.

Whilst this double a-side does have some appeal; 'Wild Child' is a buzzy synth electro number that is passable and has a scrappy undertone, courtesy of vocalist Clo Floret. Whereas 'Flesh 'n' Blood Kids' is dominated by 8-bit beeps and the occasional indie guitar stroke, but ultimately the trio create a sound that is scarce and quickly becomes dull.

Album Review: Little Fish - Baffled and Beat

Oxford's Little Fish's brand of garage rock could easily be described being built around Juju Sophie's husky, passionate voice. Throughout 'Baffled and Beat' Sophie's vocals takes charge whilst Nez Greenaway's drum work provides the backdrop, but subtly controls Sophie's delivery from going out of control; during 'Darling Dear' you get the impression that Juju may just squeal her head. The same can be said for 'Bang! Bang!'.

Elsewhere 'Heroin Dancer' 'Luck's Run Out' and 'Baffled And Beat' provide more calmer moments; the former two are slow, airy and sees the band show maturity as songwriters and musicians. While the latter has plenty of attitude, with a vintage acoustic punk rock and comparisons to PJ Harvey quickly come to mine when you hear Sophie's voice.

Interview: Little Fish

This month London duo Little Fish release their new album, 'Baffled And Beat', as well as a new single 'Whiplash'. Compared to the likes of Blondie and Juliette Lewis and having played shows with Placebo, Them Crooked Vultures and Hole, it looks like Little Fish are set to continue a linage of ballsy rock front women in the form of Juju Sophie.

In addition over the past few months, the pair have been playing several festivals, something which isn't alien to them as they played Glastonbury before they were signed.

Juju talked to Alter The Press how herself and Nez Greenaway got together, working with producer Linda Perry and more.

Alter The Press: How did the two of you meet?
Juju Sophie: We were lucky. Nez and I met on a random crazy night out in a chip shop, slightly inebriated but still sober enough to hold on to our conversation and passion for music. I was speaking loudly, and more than likely ferociously, about drummers and how I thought there was no place for drum solos in song. Nez decided to butt into the conversation to defend his ‘drummer race’. When I found out that he was a drummer, I challenged him to get a drum solo into one of my songs. The following day, we found ourselves battling out tunes in my garage. That was the start of ‘Little Fish’.

ATP: How was it playing Glastonbury festival as a relatively new band, before you were even signed?
JS: It was fun. Unfortunately, we got attacked on the way and so Nez didn’t make it through the fields as we had to split in order to lose our attackers. I made it to the stage with my acoustic guitar and there was almost nobody there. I sang my songs full of heart to a child and its parents, a couple of loved up teenagers and to a man, lying on the floor – he looked half dead and like he’d drunk a barrel of engine oil. Hopefully one day we will get on to a bigger Glastonbury stage! All these memories are good and part of our musical journey. Things like this don’t get me down, they only make me stronger.

Single Review Round-Up: The Gaslight Anthem, Dinosaur Pile-Up, Violent Soho, Four Year Strong, Little Fish and The Suzukis

This edition of the Single Review Round-Up includes singles from The Gaslight Anthem, Dinosaur Pile-Up, Violent Soho, Four Year Strong, Little Fish and The Suzukis

The Gaslight Anthem - The Diamond Church Street Choir/Boxer
Released August 9th

New Jersey's The Gaslight Anthem treat fans to a double A-side with 'The Diamond Church Street Choir'/'Boxer'. Both tracks are taken from the bands recent 'American Slang' record. The former track is a blues-y number, with a struttering guitar that calmly builds up to chilled out chorus, which allows Brian Fallon's words to stand out.

Whilst 'Boxer' is The Gaslight Anthem we know and love; feel-good, punk rock-inspired rock and roll. Driven by clever guitar work and Fallon's storytelling style, its the more favourable then the first track. Nevertheless give an accurate impression of the band and their latest full-length.
