ATP! Exclusive Stream: Adventures - "Clear My Head With You"

We're all huge supporters of Adventures over at Alter The Press HQ and today, we couldn't be more pleased to be premiering the title-track from the indie-rock quintet's new EP, Clear My Head With You.

Last year, it was a unanimous decision to vote the band's self-titled release as the best EP of 2012 and after one listen of CMHWY, it looks like we already have an early contender for 2013.

If you need some more convincing, listen to the first single "Promise" via BrooklynVegan. And it's okay, you can thank us later.

Clear My Head With You will be released on June 18th via No Sleep Records. Pre-order your copy today here.

ATP! Interview: Adventures

It's no secret that we LOVE Adventures. The Pittsburgh, PA five-piece released earlier this year possibly one of the best EPs of 2012, fusing their unique blend of indie/rock together with singer/guitarist Reba Meyers' distinctive vocals.

Whilst on their recent fall tour, Alter The Press sat down with the band to discuss the origin Adventures, signing to No Sleep Records, how they divide their time between various side-projects and more.

ATP! Album Review: Adventures - Adventures EP

Featuring three fifths of Deathwish family members Code Orange Kids (Reba, Joe and Jami) with the addition of friends Dom (guitars) and Kimi (keyboards), Adventures was born from within the Code Orange Kids practice space, and although their music is markedly milder than their hardcore heritage, it is bred from and exudes the same ferocious energy. Make no mistake, these are two very different projects; fans of one may not necessarily be into the other, but belting out an emotionally cathartic blend of indie-punk and lo-fi emo that would fit in comfortably between Lemuria and Tigers Jaw, Adventures never seem to run out of steam or fall short of passion.

ATP! Album Review: Lowtalker – Marathon EP

The convergence of Misery Signals, Living With Lions and Comeback Kid may surprise some past listeners. Lowtalker has been promised to be a whole new sound than those Stu Ross (Misery Signals/ Living With Lions), Casey Hjelmberg and Matt Keil (Comeback Kid) have become known for in their previous offerings. These whispers of post-punk innovation have not gone unheard, and with good reason, because from the first burst of guitar it’s clear there’s passion behind every performer in Lowtalker.

"Marathon" is unashamedly post-punk, mixing raw hardcore punk firepower with a sense of melody and innovation that pushes the music beyond the confines set by a genre based largely on force and message. It allows for the gorgeously ornamental opening riff to ‘Prescriptions’, a Funeral For A Friend-esque melody that dances across the guitar neck and soothes the ears while still retaining the ‘oomph’ that earns post-punk the second half of the genre’s name.

ATP! Album Review: Drug Church - S/T EP

Sometimes, a release doesn't need to be laden with emotion to be hard hitting. It doesn't have to be layered with metaphor to be meaningful. It doesn't need to be weighted with stoney-faced trips on lifestyle choices to be significant. Sometimes, three tracks of thrashing, guttural jams representative of crushed beer cans, kickflips and jobs where you have to wear a hair net are ballsy enough in their own explicitness to provide everything you could ever want from an EP, and that's cool. If you're seeking sympathy, stay clear of the morgue.

Based in Albany, Drug Church is reminiscent of 80/90's hardcore in the vein of Quicksand, Jawbreaker and Kerosene 454 - reviving the same energy and framework, and ditching the masculine bravado whilst retaining all the muscular chord progressions and grunge-heavy riffs to create something that sounds like what might materialize if Supertouch and Guns Up! achieved the musical equivalent of nuclear fusion. It's not a format Drug Church have added any particularly game changing twists to - Single Mothers, Code Orange Kids and Creem (to name a few) are all toying with a similar style in their own way - but practically every beat of this EP packs a mightier punch than Nicolas Cage in a bear costume, and there is plenty of leeway for things to get fiercely weird.

Album Review: Balance and Composure - Acoustic 7"

After the success of Balance and Composure’s 2011 album, "Separation", the band has issued an acoustic 7-inch EP (that will also be available digitally), featuring reworked versions of three of the album’s tracks.

First up is the album’s title-track, while there’s no denying that it is a great song and hasn’t been made worse by the shift to the acoustic dynamic, it’s less a reimagining and more a transposition. In fact, it’s an accusation that can be levelled at two of the three tracks on show here. It’s only "More to Me", which seems like a separate entity, in which B&C haven’t just played exactly the same version of the song with lo-fi instruments.

Album Review: Xerxes - Our Home Is A Deathbed

Anyone familiar with No Sleep Records will have a good grasp of the weight-bearing names included in their family - La Dispute, Touché Amoré and Former Thieves to name a few. The label carries with it certain expectations in terms of quality and, with that in mind, recently-signed Xerxes are appropriately placed on their roster. Taking the aggressive disposition of contemporaries like Trash Talk with melodic mid-90's stylings in the vein of Saetia and Funeral Diner, Xerces harness the texture and potency of a live performance and nail it down on record - not an easy feat in its own right, but with a staggering number of bands knocking out releases that excel in this area (No Sleep and Tangled Talk being the launching pad for many of them), it is becoming increasingly difficult to stand out among them.
