Album Review: Hot Water Music - The Fire, The Steel, The Tread EP
Life as a Hot Water Music fan has been tough over the last seven years. The band broke up, undertook their own separate projects, did a few reunion shows, released a compilation, but never committed anything new to tape. Up until now that is. Ardent fans rejoice, as Gainsville’s finest have returned to the studio and committed two new tracks to tape. Not only that, but this two-song morsel represents a nice stop-gap until the band record and releases a new album on Rise Records early next year. Good news all round.
The two songs that make up this release show the band incorporating the individual ideas of the band's members, and the kind of things they have been doing on their break. Though there’s no obvious reference to Senses Fail and Against Me!, the influence of Chris Wollard and Chuck Ragan’s respective solo careers leave their mark on the songs. This reflects where the band are musically quite well, and results in a progression in the overall sound since their last full-length ‘The New What Next’.
‘The Fire, The Steel, The Tread’ is the track that is most influenced by Ragan’s solo work. In fact, those that say it sounds like an electric Chuck song aren’t too far from the truth. In the same way that Ragan’s solo stuff does, the song channels the spirit of blue-collar America beautifully. There’s a real gritty rhythm to this track that churns away in a manner that would make even the biggest computer geek yearn for the iron works. Unsurprisingly, it's Ragan who handles the main vocal duties on this one, and the jazz-like rhythm section of Rebello and Black is back to its best.
It’s Chris Wollard, however, who leaves his signature on ‘Up To Nothing’. This is a more traditional sounding Hot Water Music song that also takes some cues from 'The Draft'. Wollard handles vocal duties, and lends his voice well to the superb chorus. Once again, the guitar work and rhythm section are up to scratch and work so well together it’s like they never had a break.
It will really depend on which vocalist you favor, as to which track has the biggest appeal, however one thing is certain, these tracks serve as an excellent aperitif to a new and exciting dawn for the band. It’s good to have you back, boys.
5/5
'The Fire, The Steel, The Tread' EP is out August 2nd.

Album Review: Zebrahead - Get Nice!
It’s very easy to dismiss Zebrahead these days, but after listening to their latest album, 'Get Nice!', the best bit of advice I can give, is to just give it a chance, admittedly there are one or two complete duds, but otherwise this 14-song album is great.
Things kick off with “Blackout”, like most of the songs on the album it’s a chorus-led song, and it’s done so well. “Nothing To Lose” will inevitably be a single, it sounds as if it’s pretty much a sequel to 'Broadcast To The Worlds'',“Anthem”. The momentum of the album drops dramatically with “She Don’t Wanna Rock”, which sounds like a Jedward song and doesn’t have any place on the album at all.
Album Review: Portugal. The Man - In The Mountain In The Cloud
With this release, Portugal. The Man have now put out seven records in six years, with that type of work rate, it’s always going to be difficult to maintain a high-quality sound.
Thankfully, 'In The Mountain In The Cloud' isn’t a terrible release by any means, but it’s nothing ground-breaking or brilliant either. What it is, is a very stifling, middle of the road release that sounds as if it was made for a mainstream audience, which isn’t really a surprise given that this is their first album since signing to Atlantic Records last year. The biggest problem with this record is that there’s a distinct lack of urgency and the production values are seriously poor.

Album Review: The Story So Far - Under Soil And Dirt
The Story So Far could have taken the easy route on their debut full length by re-recording the tracks off their EP and bundling it with a few sub-par b-sides, thankfully they haven’t.
‘Under Soil And Dirt’ does feature a couple of re-recorded songs, but they sound more vital than the originals, and the additional material is fresh, exciting and better than anything the group has tabled in the past.
‘Under Soil And Dirt’ is a spotless slice of modern pop-punk. It is without any of the sticking points that ruins so many modern pop-punk albums. There are no synths, no beat downs and no whiny vocals. In fact, the vocals and lyrics of Parker Cannon are perhaps the album's biggest selling point. Relentlessly brilliant and full of energy throughout, when Cannon sings not only are you instantly hooked by the passion, but you believe what he is singing.

Album Review: Young Guns - All Our Kings Are Dead: Gold Edition
In the space between the release of their vastly impressive debut and the recording of the yet-to-be-named follow-up,Young Guns offer up some brand new content on ‘All Our Kings Are Dead: Gold Edition’.
With the album itself identical to the original, it’s left to a bonus DVD to justify the re-release, and parting with your precious cash. A documentary entitled ‘Don’t Look Back, Just Keep Moving’, tracking the rapid rise enjoyed by the band since their humble beginnings at the start of 2008, is a distinctly personal insight, serving as a timeline, taking in their formation, the recording and touring of their debut EP and heading out on the road with the likes of Lostprophets, Taking Back Sunday, All Time Low and Bon Jovi.
Album Review: The Downtown Fiction - Let's Be Animals
The hypnotizing movement of clear blue, chlorine-filled pool water. Darkening skin, sizzling with the odd drop of sweat. Kids playing an unruly game of volleyball with a multi-colored, oversized beach ball and an improvised net. You can now add a stereo churning out The Downtown Fiction's debut album, 'Let's Be Animals' to that list to give yourself a good description of any suburban habitant's regular summer. It's hard to imagine the target audience being anything other than at the teen-section of the spectrum, but their sugar-coated pop snacks are sure to find some hungry bellies.
Unfortunately, I would have to blame it on the market's constant desire for no-risk bands, capable of churning out catchy tunes with enough boy-meets-girl-fuelled angst to tickle the fancies of any youngsters who have access to a radio. Any of the tracks on the album could be potential hit-singles, as they all possess a tame, but ultimately effective, hook and don't rock enough to truly alienate anyone.
