Album Review: My Lost Youth - You And All Your Friends

Yorkshire pop-punk outfit My Lost Youth have kept it short and sweet with their debut three track EP. Given that the EP’s name appears to be a throwback to early Taking Back Sunday there is a lot for them to live up to with ‘You And All Your Friends’.

Opening track ‘I Won’t Fall’ starts off with drums before adding in guitars then more guitars before the vocals kick off. The vocals are quick and well-articulated, clarity is important and it’s good to give the lyrics the chance to stand out.

Album Review: Trophy Scars - Darkness, Oh Hell

Like a piece of art or a much hyped piece of cinema, in music, there are always tell-tale signs that you are onto something quality. And despite never having heard any of Trophy Scars’ previous output I knew of their reputation for playing genre-bending, high-quality music. As soon as the opening strains of “Sauvez-moi de l’enfer” begin, the listener is well aware that they are listening to something out of the ordinary.

The opening track, a mood-setter, ends as quickly as it begins and launches into the rip roaring, multi-instrumental fare that is “Nausea”. While the soaring brass will knock you back in your seat, it is the guttural vocals that really stand-out. This is as complex a rock band as you are likely to find in this genre, introducing so many layers to their music that it will take listen upon listen upon listen to fully appreciate everything that is going on. One thing noticeable on first listen is how well this EP flows. The songs end and begin in a seemingly fluid motion, with each track sounding like a natural progression from the last. The cynic in me is crying out that perhaps each song on the EP lasts slightly too long, that maybe Trophy Scars should have reined in some of their ideas, but when they are successful, they do create epic sounding rock songs.

Album Review: Wild Orchid Children - ... Are Alexander Supertramp

Hurtling out of the underground Seattle scene and falling straight into the limelight, Wild Orchid Children’s debut LP ‘... Are Alexander Supertramp’ is set to shake things up a bit. In fact it doesn’t just shake things up, it totally blows your mind!

Opening with the aptly named ‘We Are Alexander Supertramp’, the track is deceptively slow paced and a little non-descript to start with; it really is a misleading opener; you’re left with no idea as to how the rest of the album is going to go.

Album Review: In the Audience - What Lives

It is impressive enough when a group of young musicians put out a great album, but it is even more impressive when they put it out on their own record label. Self proclaimed “Indie pop collective” In The Audience have done just that. Hailing from Portland and Toronto, their debut album ‘What Lives’ was released earlier this month on New Friends – a label co-founded by band members Jordan Stowell (vocals) and Sonia Sturino (keyboards) in 2009 when they were just nineteen. Well, I say band members. The only two consistent members of In The Audience are Jordan Stowell and Cam Jones (drums), with other musicians weaving in and out of the line-up as and when.

Artists such as Anathallo and Land of Talk are listed among their influences, but their sound is more akin to Tigers Jaw, with vocals often evocative of Mark Kozelek (Red House Painters/ Sun Kill Moon). In the Audience share the energetic, blue-collar aesthetic of The Ataris or Gaslight Anthem, and the cover of ‘What Lives’–a black and white snapshot of a typical suburban American neighbourhood – could not be more befitting for songs that are wrapped up with relationships, identity, growing up, and growing old. Despite everyone involved with this band being born in the 1990’s, their songs come across as mature and well crafted.

Album Review: Nicholas Stevenson - Phantom Sweetheart

With support slots from Frank Turner and Mumford and Sons already under his belt, Nicholas Stevenson is one of those people that will be rocketed into the limelight before he even grasps what’s happening. His haunting vocals and inspiring melodies don’t hurt his chances either. Released on Halloween, the aptly titled ‘Phantom Sweetheart’ will stay you for a long time after the first listen.

‘Hounds’ is the opening track, and really sets the mood for the rest of the album. Stevenson’s dulcet tones blend perfectly with the gentle guitar, but borderlines on being just a little too dreary. ‘Maybe The Moon’ is more layered and upbeat, despite the fact that it’s just a voice and an acoustic guitar. This track is simple, but yet moving and unforgettable. This is a running theme throughout the album, and the simplicity of the songs is what makes this album so good.

Album Review: Modern Superstitions - All The Things We've Been Told

Toronto's Modern Superstitions confidently go from plucky Blondie-like punk to sultry guitar powerpop on 'All The Things We've Been Told'. The opening 'Go-Between' kicks off at a good pace, with a slight nostalgic feel as Nyssa Rosaleen's powerful vocals dominate over laid back guitar lines, whilst 'Visions Of You' sees the band heading down a somewhat jazzy route with a basic swing beat allowing Rosaleen's "Ooh-ah, ooh-ah" to take centre stage.

The relaxing 'Everything That is Not Mine' is next with is easy-going guitar plucks, where once again Rosaleen's sultry vocals take over. Whereas 'Beck & Call' is more lively with stabbing guitars and the band as a whole sound more energetic, but the track some becomes dull and dosn't challenge itself. By the time 'Love That Beats My Heart' and 'Mercy Line' come around, the band are in their comfort zone, where the occasional stab of scrappy indie rock makes an appearance; think Be Your Own Pet but a bit more slicker.

Modern Superstitions do sound pretty well-knit, with decent song structures, acceptable guitar work and brilliant vocals but unfortunately 'All The Things We've Been Told' fails to leave any lasting impact. Although the bands talent is promising, I felt Modern Superstitions lacked originality.

2.5/5

'All The Things We've Been Told' by Modern Superstitions is available now on Pink Noise/Last Gang Records.

New All Time Low Album Details Are Untrue

The previously reported track listing and release date for the new All Time Low album, 'Dirty Work' has been confirmed as untrue.

Album Review: Weezer - Pinkerton (Deluxe Edition)

For any band with a lengthy discography, their fan base always have their favourite album by that band, for example some Beatles fans prefer 'Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band', whilst others prefer 'Revolver'. A more recent argument could be that Jimmy Eat World's 'Clarity' and 'Bleed American' are both held in high regard by their fans. For Weezer fans, the bands self-titled 'Blue' album and 'Pinkteron' are often stated the bands best output. (For me it's always been the 'Blue' album.)

For those Weezer fans they've been treated pretty well lately, along with this deluxe edition of the 1996 album, Weezer released 'Hurley' in September and a rarities collection, 'Death To False Metal' will be released at the same time of this record.

The Dangerous Summer Free Song

The Dangerous Summer have made the song, 'Good Things', available as a free download via Amazon.

Album Review: Your Demise - The Kids We Used To Be

‘The Kids We Used To Be’ is the first recording with new vocalist Ed McRae, but it is still unequivocally and unmistakeably Your Demise. The Centurion vocalist is easier to listen to than George Noble ever was, and it does the band no end of good. This is a hardcore-punk assault on your ears, and you’ll love every minute of it.

‘MMX’ begins with McRae barking out “Your Demise 2010, Bitch” which immediately establishes this is new ground for the band. They are back, and they are better than ever. This track is pretty much two fingers up to the world, and the fans will lap it up. This carries on into ‘Miles Away’, with the chant of “fuck the world”, accompanied by the furious guitar and unrelenting drums we are so used to hearing. This track is hardcore at it’s best.
