Album Review: Tall Trees - Scream Danger EP
When you think of Jimmy Eat World, either you're sitting down in a schoolyard looking forward to opening that Toy Story lunchbox you hold so dear with a copy of "awesome" 'Invented' loaded into your "Cool Summer Vibe" iPod playlist, or you've got a wall decorated with 'Clarity'/'Static Prevails' vinyl and a liberal arts degree. This situation leaves little space for an alternative market for new pop-rock bands to dig their teeth in, yet the wave of popedom still rolls strong, meaning every once in a while us reviewers get treated to some half-decent new sounds.
With their latest EP 'Scream Danger', Tall Trees sound like a band who wants to get liberal art degree hipsters and schoolkids to hang out at gigs. All in all, the band follow the genre conventions set out by Jimmy Eat World a decade ago, while showcasing a few of their own ideas. In fact, in their best moments the band come up with tracks like 'Terrible Things' and 'Never Listen', when their pop-sensibilities match the attempted edginess of their rock credibility. The hooks are tight and the vocals' slight acerbic edge work well with the heavier sections.

Album Review: Less Than Jake - Greetings From Less Than Jake
Title-holders of the ska-punk scene, Less Than Jake, failing to be thwarted by the likes of passing genres that have tried to step in their way over the years such as; Nu-Metal, Emo, Crabcore and Screamo. Over their 19 year stay in the genre, they have released an accumilative 286 other releases with no plans to retire anytime soon.
Album Review: Moonlit Sailor - Colors In Stereo
You know what? Sometimes, and lean in because I’m going to say this quietly, I like to listen to happy music. Not inane music, not banal music, just happy music, uplifting music and goddamnit, yes, I want music to be beautiful occasionally. It’s what drew me towards post-rock in the first place. And for every hauntingly beautiful track that Saxon Shore produce, or bittersweet slice of 8-minute schadenfreude that Explosions release, there is very little uncomplicated post-rock. Step up Moonlit Sailor and believe me when I say that this is a compliment – you are the closest thing to a pop band that your genre may ever produce.
Album Review: Alcopop! Records - We Grew Up On A Diet Of Jurassic Park And Sensible Soccer (And All We've Got Left Is This Lousy Record Label)
Alcopop make a great habit of snapping up some of the best talent the UK has to offer, and this knack for discovery has offered a platform for some amazing bands over the past five years. With this in mind it’s no surprise that on its fifth birthday Alcopop! Records is letting loose its 50th release. 'We Grew Up On A Diet Of Jurassic Park And Sensible Soccer (And All We've Got Left Is This Lousy Record Label)’ is a 17 track compilation CD that celebrates the past five years in true Alcopop fashion, with some of the finest artwork you’ll see this year, and a bloody jacket. No seriously, a jacket made by Dickies.

Feature: Tigers Jaw - Indie/Rock's Best Kept Secret?
When people mention Scranton, Pennsylvania, they may well think of Dunder Mifflin, the fictitious company from NBC hit show, The Office, which is set there. This is sure to change in the near future however, as with sold out shows, legions of fans worldwide and limited vinyl pressings already exchanging hands for hundreds of dollars on eBay, Tigers Jaw have already accomplished much in a very short space of time.

Album Review: The Catharsis - God Damned EP
The Catharsis are a hardcore band you shouldn’t brush over, from the beginning of the opening track on their aptly titled – 'God Damned EP.' On ‘Deletist’ I can hear Minor Threat, Senses Fail, Gallows and other giants in the raw power of a sound that in their capable hands, screams out more innovative than ever before.
One thing that really stands out about this band is the efficiency of drummer Bev, whose incredibly flexible nature lends absolute power to this Birmingham brewed flood of hardcore. Just listen to ‘3.06’ and you will see for yourself just how competent this drummer is, coping with time changes I have seen many good drummers fall at, Bev seals the lid on this jar of monstrous rock shut as tightly as possible. However, the tour de force that is ‘Party Scars’ will blast you out of your comfort zone into an insane romp where you will be so full of energy that moshing will become mandatory.
Interview: The Cape Race
With a blend of straight-up rock and powerful pop sensibilities, Manchester's The Cape Race have gradually been making a name for themselves in the past few months and it's likely to continue with the release of the band's free debut mini-album, 'Now, Voyager'.
Formed from the ashes of The Honeymoon Suite, The Cape Race is a more mature and focused band with, 'Now, Voyager' being a collection of vibrant and sensible songs.
Alter The Press! recently spoke to vocalist David Moloney about the new band's debut release, the decision to release it for free, working with producer Peter Miles and more.
Alter The Press: Several members of The Cape Race were originally part of The Honeymoon Suite. Could you tell us why that band ended and how has the transition to The Cape Race been?
David Moloney (vocals): Writing the music and performing the songs by the end of The Honeymoon Suite became such a chore. It wasn’t happening naturally to the point where we’d have to force ourselves to churn out the kinds of songs people would expect to hear from us. The whole of the last THS EP is the sound of a band not being themselves. It started to feel contrived, and we got tired of being part of that scene with those types of bands. The Cape Race was a natural progression of where our tastes had headed at that point. We made a conscious decision to write the way we wanted to write and not the way we felt we had to.
