Cobra Starship members in car accident

Gabe Saporta, Alex Suarez and Vicky T from Cobra Starship were recently involved in a car accident in New Zealand.

They have posted the following from their blog:

"so what happened my first day in New Zealand? well, I had a sweet day of sight seeing, took a nap, got up and dressed to go out. Was super excited to go out as I've been sick with a cold the past few days and stayed in. My good friend Aaron is in town which is fantastic. Gabe, Suarez, Aaron, our friend Sue and I get into a car. Just before we take off, I realized I couldn't wear a seatbelt. I ALWAYS wear a seatbelt and make everyone wear theirs as well.

I said to everyone "well if we get in a car accident. I love all of you." sure enough, what happens? we get in an accident and I get injured. Gabe went flying into the seat in front of him and hit his chest, I flew forward and was holding onto a handle inside the car and fucked up my arm and shoulder as a result. Luckily everyone is okay, sadly my arm is not. I couldn't move my arm at first but then eventually could after it clicked a few times.

An ambulance pulls up and out pops some paramedics and a camera crew. Some kind of reality tv show was in the ambulance and has been documenting different accidents. crazy. So of course we dropped cobras and told the story of our accident!

I then had to go in an ambulance with my friend Aaron. There was a guy in the car with bad head injuries. It was sad. We had a dialogue about our accidents and I told him I knew he was going to end up alright. He smiled and thanked me.

Finally get to the hospital. Waited around for 5 hours. Got X-rays eventually. Ends up my shoulder is very badly sprained. I can't move it without coming to tears. It feels like every time I move it that it is dislocating - sucks. As I go to leave the guy with the head injuries is leaving as well. I smiled and said, "glad you're alright." he responded with, "glad you are too."

I was given a bunch of pain killers at the hospital. Returned to the hotel where TAI, Panic at the Disco and my boys all came back to meet me. They all greeted me, we had drinks, I then ate some breakfast and passed out around 7am.

I am on a couple pain killers at the moment and feeling loopy so hopefully my story telling is coherent. We just played a show. I had to play part of it in an arm sling. I was really out of it the whole time because of the pills I had to take for the pain.

I'm gonna go lay down. My arm is killing me.

but there you go. a little update- drive safe everyone and wear your seatbelts please! I'm so thankful none of us were severely injured."

Billy Talent to team up with Anti-Flag

Album Review: Portman - From Here To Your Eyes and Ears

Portman are a six-piece band from Stamford, a small town near Peterborough and have recently released their debut album, 'From Here To Your Eyes and Ears' released on Pep-Rock/Wal Nut Tree Records. Portman are made up of James Cuccio, Luke Warrington (both Guitar and Vocals), James K Sanford (Guitar, Vocals and Synth and Programming), Toby Potter (Bass and Vocals) and Luke Raymond (Drums and Vocals).

'From Here To...' starts off with the album title track, which is a brief intro consisting of group vocals and a sample. The record then kicks into 'Overestimating Your Audience', with Get Up Kids- style guitar and song structure. 'I Can Do Anything' sees the band slowing things down, this concept continues with 'All Is Not Well In Middle England'.

'Who Watches The Watchman?' starts off with a nice piano intro and then builds into a song which is well written and well played, with a combination of a good beat and background vocals. 'The Great Machine' is another great track with a mixture of quiet verse and a shouting chorus.

'Back To Default' is a ballad with a simple use of piano and stops the album from becoming repetitive. 'Those Left Behind' is built around a electronic-based beat which is nicely complimented by an acoustic guitar and keyboard. The album comes back to life with 'Whatever Next', which wouldn't be unrecognised if it was on a Mid-90's emo mixtape, with Sunny Day Real Estate and The Get Up Kids being an key influence on this track.

'We Are Nihilists Lebowski' starts off beautifully with sweet keys and pleasant guitars and then sees the band letting off some steam with them all shouting "We don't believe in anyone or anything anymore'. The album's penultimate track 'Can't Stop The Signal' which sees the band continue their use of 90's emo song structure. 'Last Broadcast' is sample-heavy outro, which rounds off the album with the band using radio signal beeps, synth keyboards and movie dialogue samples. The track is an interesting affair which sees the band going in a different direction and eventually ends with band peforming one last set of group vocals.

On the whole 'From Here To Your Eyes' is a refreshing listen, in a time where bands are trying to be the next Fall Out Boy etc, Portman have stuck to their influences and have written a collection of good songs, which are original and are combined with good musicianship. The only likely downfall of 'From Here To Your Eyes and Ears' is at times the record seems a bit too long and perhaps one or two tracks could of been excluded.

Album Review: The Academy Is... Fast Times At Barrington High

The Academy Is... are a Pop-Punk/"Emo" band originating from Chicago, Illinois, home to bands such as Alkaline Trio and Fall Out Boy. The Academy Is... definitely sound more like the latter and their latest album especially proves this. The band is made up of William Beckett (Vocals), Adam Siska on Bass, Michael Guy Chislett and Mike Carden both take up Guitar duties and Andy Mrotek plays drums.

This is The Academy Is...'s third album, an album which from the off is set to win back fans, who disliked the more grown up indie rock sound of last year's 'Santi'. Fast Times at Barrington High starts off with 'About A Girl' which sees the band returning to their Pop-Punk roots, with a catchy chorus and teen-angst lyrics with singer William Beckett not wasting his time on a girl. Beckett continues his nostalgic look on his teen years with 'Summer Hair Forever Young'.

The third track 'His Girl Friday' also continues this theme, however the track proves to be well structured with poppy synth-backed chorus.

TAI's nostalgic look on their High School year's soon becomes tiresome with songs such as 'The Test', 'Rumored Nights' and 'Automatic Eyes', contributing to this, even though they fit in well into the album.

'Coppertone' sees the band briefly return to their 'Almost Here' sound which goes along a nice pace and includes a nice pop-rock chorus. However the band soon return to their nostalgic look with 'After The Last Midtown Show', a ballad which recollects on the band's High School days being the best of their lives. 'Beware Cougar' sees Beckett being serious as he discusses the problem of dealing with adult relationships. 'Paper Chase' sees the band's High School days ending, as it is graduation and 'One More Weekend' being the final school blow out.

Overall 'Fast Times At Barrington High' to an extent is a concept album, with the continuous theme of High School memories. However it soon becomes a tired concept despite the album starting off with 3 catchy and fun tracks, the rest of the albums seems to drift along with it's combination of nostalgia and standard Pop-Rock sound.
The album will win back fans, however it is likely those fan's will be those who are in their teens, which is of course is the band's target album. This unfortunately isolates the band's older fan's who preferred the slightly more grown up lyrics of 'Almost Here' and 'Santi', rather then the reminiscent lyrics of this record.

Fall Out Boy announce first single and discuss new album

Fall Out Boy have announced the first single off their forthcoming album, 'Folie a Deux' will be entitled, 'I Don't Care'. The following press release was issued:

"Multi-platinum three-time MTV VMA-winning Island Records group Fall Out Boy have officially announced their upcoming new third Island album FOLIE A DEUX, to be released on November 4th 2008. The band told a packed audience about the release last night at the 2008 Democratic National Convention, when they headlined the "Rock the Vote Ballot Bash." FOLIE A DEUX was produced by Neal Avron at The Pass Studios in Los Angeles. The first single will be the track "I Don't Care." Radio dates to be announced shortly.

For FOLIE A DEUX, Fall Out Boy spearheaded a politically charged group that unveiled cryptic "Big Brother" type messages in order to support and ignite a democratic process. Impressively, the creative album roll-out garnered over 1 Million impressions in just one week online across literally hundreds of websites such as absolutepunk.net, friendsorenemies.com, Live journal communities and many other popular music websites, including the band's own site, www.falloutboyrock.com. "This roll-out was started to engage people and let them tell their own stories. We came up with the beginning and the end, while the rest happened organically." says FOB bass player Pete Wentz."

The band has also commented about the upcoming album and its release coencideing with the upcoming presidential election:

"The title of the new album is Folie à Deux. It means 'the shared madness of two' — thank you, Dictionary.com," FOB bassist Pete Wentz laughed. "It's not an overtly political record, but I'm not gonna say what it is." "And I also wouldn't say it's not a political record, it's just one of those things," frontman Patrick Stump added. "We'll just let the record speak for itself, but it is coming out on Election Day."

Folie à Deux is released November 4th on Island.

Wheatus cancel 14 dates of UK tour

Wheatus have cancelled more than half of their upcoming UK tour starting next month. The following statement was made:

As you may or may not know, Wheatus have been advertised to perform at several universities throughout the United Kingdom and Ireland this fall, as well as a select few clubs. These tour dates were tentatively proposed to run from mid-September until early October and would primarily involve full-band performances at several Uni Freshers Balls.

We deeply regret to announce that we will not be performing at any of these events:

Sep. 29: Swansea
Sep. 30: Aberystwyth
Oct. 01: Dublin, Ireland
Oct. 02: Cork, Ireland
Oct. 03: Portlaoise, Ireland
Oct. 04: Dublin, Ireland
Oct. 05: Donegal, Ireland
Oct. 06: Royal Holloway College, Egham
Oct. 07: Peterborough, The Park
Oct. 08: Sheffield Corporation
Oct. 09: Hertford
Oct. 10: Liverpool Carling Academy
Oct. 11: Nottingham, Junction 7
Oct. 12: Preston, 53 Degrees

In the future, any mention of us performing at any show that is not confirmed on our website or our MySpace page should be completely disregarded.

This situation has been extremely complex and stressful, and we feel you are all owed an explanation. While we were aware of the possibility of performing at several universities and clubs this fall, and were indeed engaged in negotiations to do so, we were prematurely and unlawfully confirmed to perform at some of them by our booking agent before we had gotten the chance to review if this tour would be feasible for us. Some universities even started advertising our show prior to us being presented with contracts. At the center of it all, there is a double-header show (two performances on the same night) that was booked without our consent. Despite the fact that we repeatedly confirmed in writing and over the phone that this was a logistical impossibility for us, our communications seemed to have been disregarded. Those we communicated with failed to reiterate our inabilities to the promoter and university. We were also told that refusal to "try" to do the impossible would result in several other integral show offers being withdrawn, which would have made the entire tour fall apart. Furthermore, it has come to our attention that one of the booking agents was unlawfully misrepresenting himself as our manager, complete with power of attorney to confirm shows in our name. Wheatus have been self-managed since May of 2006.

When we found out all this had happened, we were devastated. At any rate, the net result was a long, vague, and contradictory negotiation to try and reach a compromise that skillfully avoided disappointing the universities, the promoters, the students, and, most importantly, fans of the band. Unfortunately, all of our suggestions for compromise were eventually denied and we were forced to cancel a tour we never actually agreed to in the first place.

All of our suggested compromises left us with a devastating net financial loss for the tour, which we were prepared to accept if certain conditions were met and certain unlawful misrepresentations were corrected. Unfortunately, the opposing parties were either unwilling to discuss the issue with us or unwilling to compromise. In addition, some of the opposing parties, who shall remain nameless, issued threats of physical violence and career damage in writing to us if we refused to do the tour on their terms. Obviously, the circumstances presented us with an impossible situation. We deeply regret any inconvenience or disappointment this may have caused any of you.

Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, after the September 11th attacks, Wheatus were advised by attorneys, managers and label representatives to cancel a tour scheduled for the Fall of 2001 because of fears of terrorism being carried out against American acts. Many other American acts did cancel that season for those reasons. Wheatus, however, carried through on all of the obligations they were able to that Autumn, and came through with one of the finest and most uplifting experiences human beings can have; enjoying live music together with the infamously wonderful rock fans of England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales. We are not faint of heart. We are not unwilling to go deep into debt in order to play on stages in the United Kingdom. We have done so, and will continue to as long as we are alive.

Sincerely,
Wheatus

Wheatus still are due to play the following dates:

Gerard Way (My Chemical Romance) posts update

Gerard Way (singer of My Chemical Romance) has posted an update about what the band are currently up to:

Hey guys,

Gerard here... I'm hanging out with Mikey in New Jersey, relaxing, drinking coffee, talking comics, and getting ready to take a drive down south tomorrow. I don't know what states I'm passing through but I know where I'm heading. Don't worry I've got a the Clockwork Orange audiobook, a Dr. Pepper air-freshener, and a GPS so I don't get lost. We figured b now everyone that's a fan of the band might be wondering what we're up to, what we're planning, so I thought I'd write this letter and fill you all in.

We're living, decompressing- The Black Parade took over two years to tour and six months to make so that's a lot of existing in a fictional world, and we're just extremely happy to live in a real one for a while. One thing I can let you know is that we're excited. Genuinely more excited then we have ever been to be in this band, make some new music. Genuinely more excited then we have ever been in this band, make some new music. And we have ALL been writing new material in our own separate worlds... I started a week after I got home, buying a good rig, an old Jag, and a bunch of pedals- just searching for the next sound.

Bob is recovering well from his recent wrist surgery- exceedingly well considering how risky the procedure can be. We're all really happy that when he picks up the sticks again he won't be in the intense pain he was in during the last year of touring. It's going to take him a while to rehabilitate but know him, he will most likely be playing the drums before the doctor says it's a good idea. He just loves playing, we all do. Franks on the road with Leathermouth and Reggie and The Full Effect so you should go see them and get spit on. I know Leathermouth doesn't have a record out yet, but Frank gave it to me in Mexico and I can easily say it's my favorite post-hardcore record of the year, so I know you will at least enjoy the songs if you don't know the words.

One of the best parts of the last five months was getting to see Ray get married and all of us be a part of the wedding. It was beautiful. I'm not sure where the happy couple is right now but I am sure wherever they are, they are really enjoying it. I have never seen him happier in my life. So we made plans to get together soon and make some demos, see where our heads are at, take it slow. If explosions happen in our heads right away who knows how soon we could have a record out, we aren't in any rush but we get just as anxious as you to find out what the next "thing is going to be.

So that about wraps it up... I'm glad I could stop by for a chat, I think I will do it more often. I'm writing more comics, writing more music, and missing my wife right now. Oh, and I heard a rumor that I died in a car accident.
I didn't.

Leathermouth (Frank Iero side project) play first show on current US tour

Demolitionlove on LiveJournal has reviewed the first Leathermouth set on their current US tour with Reggie and the Full Effect:

"If you take one thing away from the Reggie & The Full Effect/Leathermouth shows, it's that James Dewees loves him some Miley Cryus and Frank has a lot of shit to be pissed off about although we're not quite sure what. Words cannot begin to describe how epic this show was.

Frank wants us all to know that this is not fucking MCR shit (despite the beautiful fact that all their equipment is labeled with red tape that clearly says MCR and Revenge on it) and after asking for a show of hands of who was under 18, declared that having underage girls at a show is a new thing for him. He's so special. We also learned that Frank still has all his best kindergarten skills in tact despite his knack for wanting to burn you in your fucking house now. He loves to play and share with others... his hands, his mic and perhaps his spit. Frank Iero needs to work a little on his 'indoor voice' but we can make an exception just this once.

The show itself was clearly amazing and despite the wind and rain that pelted Leathermouth on their way to Florida and continued to fall during the show soaking all of us in line and on the way out the door, they managed to make it here and put on a fucking kick ass show. The Social, in Orlando, is a venue that wasn't meant for more than 300 people, maybe 400 so it was hard to wander around without running into someone incredibly wonderful in all their screaming glory. We all screamed because we couldn't hear a fucking thing but that's why it's so great. At some point, Frank promised that some day they'd out out a CD but it was blantantly obvious that with the way we were all screaming back, none of us were holding our breath for that to come to fruition.

Dressed all in white with t-shirts that they had made themselves with handwritten letters, that had you lined them up for mugshots would have spelled out MOUTH, they looked pure like the virgins we are sure they all are. Frank showed us just how virginal he claimed to be since he spent a good part of the show kneeling on stage. Could those screams be actual prayers to prevent him from being mobbed in the latter part of that show by the massive attack of the aforementioned underage girls? Sadly, no. God doesn't love thieves and when we caught a glimpse of Frank sporting sunglasses that looked much like Gerard Way's Starsky & Hutch lenses, we knew that he had either stole them from his MCR bandmate or Gerard had taught him well. The band sounded amazing. They were tight (random mention of pants is fleeting) and performed well together, especially for their first show of the tour.

The setlist was as follows:

Catch Me If You can
I'm Going to Kill the President of the United States of America
Sunsets are for Muggings
Bodysnatchers Forever
Leviathan
5th Period Massacre
This Song Is About Being Attacked By Monsters
My Love Note Has Gone Flat
Murder Was the Case that they Gave Me

Geoff Rickly of Thursday and United Nations has said his latter band's debut album is set to stream on their myspace from tomorrow.

In the interview with Alternative Press Rickly said "I think the whole album's gonna be posted then. I think.", when he was asked about a song being posted on the band's myspace.

Rickly also talks about how the band formed and the aim of having all the records recorded within a year.

"From the beginning, record all our records in one year, and not record ever again. So there's actually the first United Nations full-length, [which] is done. There's a 7" for Deathwish called Nevermind The Bombings...Here's Your Six Figures. There's a 10" called Music For Interchanging Parts. And then our second full-length is called Dark Side Of The UN. And that's all been recorded."

Rage Against The Machine Plan Republican Convention Stunt

Rage Against The Machine's Zack de la Rocha is planning a stunt to hijack this week's Republican Convention, that will see John McCain officially named as the Republican Party's Presidential candidate. This news came about after Reading and Leeds Festival boss, Melvin Benn said:

"He wanted to play Friday and Saturday, because there's a Democratic Convention [in Denver] and he wanted to be at that and there's a Republican one on Wednesday (August 27) and he wanted to go and picket that, and there's a stunt they're going to pull off that will no doubt hit CNN during the course of the week."

Avenged Sevenfold pull out of Reading Festival last minute

Avenged Sevenfold have been forced to drop out of their appearance at the Reading Festival later today due to frontman, M. Shadows, suffering from vocal problems.

Here is the statement they have made taken from their myspace page:

"We're very sorry to tell you that Avenged Sevenfold will not be performing at Reading today, August 24.  As many of you know, the band had to shorten their set at Leeds Friday due to vocal strain. Since then, Matt's doctors in the United Kingdom and Los Angeles have both advised him that he must rest his voice and cannot perform.

Thankfully there are no long term problems and with proper rest, Matt will return to the road shortly. The band toured all summer with Iron Maiden throughout Europe and the UK. They returned home August 1, but because they wanted to play Reading and Leeds very much, they returned this week for the festival.  They were blown away by the number of fans who came to see them play at Leeds. The band is still in England now and is extremely disappointed that they can't play a show they have been looking forward to for a long time.

A7X will return to the United Kingdom at the beginning of 09.

Matt will post a personal message shortly but we wanted to get you the news immediately"

Hoppus talks about the death of Jerry Finn

+44 Frontman Mark Hoppus has posted a blog about the recent passing away of close freind and record producer Jerry Finn. The post entitled 'Today The World Became Less Musical' said:

"one of my best friends passed away today. jerry finn was one of the most talented, funniest, coolest, smartest, and honest people i’ve ever known. he was true in every sense of the word. true in his love of music, true in his friendships. jerry loved life. he was happiest when quietly making music he loved, and loudly making fun of everything he didn’t. when i think of times spent with jerry, all i can think of is us laughing. so much laughter. he’s just one of those guys with the quickest wit in the room. he also knows more about music than anyone. and i mean that seriously. he knows musicians, instruments, amplifiers, recording equipment, engineers, producers, albums, and studios like some people know sports statistics. jerry could tell you who played what instrument on which track of pretty much any album you could name, and then go on to tell you who produced it, who engineered it, in what room of which studio, and so on. it’s really kind of amazing. he worked on many of my favorite albums of all time, and helped shape the sound and direction of blink-182 from enema of the state all the way through to the end and into +44. he was into family guy, south park, and mr show before anyone else had even heard of those shows. and when my son was born, while everyone else was sending us baby blankets and teddy bears, jerry and his girlfriend gave him a tiny extra small black leather jacket covered in metal studs and ramones pins.

i’m sitting here now and i don’t even know what to type. i’m at a loss for words. nothing i can say will come close to describing what an amazing human being jerry was. his talent, his laughter, his love of life. every day i spent with jerry over the past ten years i feel like he taught me something new about music, or recording. or life. i think everyone who knew jerry would say the same thing. i feel blessed to have worked with and learned so much from him. but most of all i am honored to call him my dear friend. jerry, i miss you already"
