Album Review: Tigers Jaw / Tiny Engines Split 7"

It seems like Tigers Jaw are on a split record every other month these days, but whatever, it works. They have consistently rolled out one solid release after another and their most recent effort with Tiny Engines (a new group made up of old favorites from O Pioneers, New Bruises, Senders and Mid Carson July) is no exception. Similar to their previous splits with Balance and Composure and The Sidekicks, the tracks on this EP serve both as decent entry points for new listeners and satisfying appetizers for older fans hungering for fresh material between LP's.

When the first chords of "My Friend Morrissey" ring out they strike a much thicker, dreamier tone for Tigers Jaw, which is a surprising step away from the increasingly darker and ragged sound they have recently been building on with "Two Worlds" and the Balance and Composure split. Given that they are a band with such a distinctive sound, the first few bars are almost unrecognizable as Tigers Jaw, but then the familiar blocked-nose vocals kick in with those hallmark melodies and you know where you are. With sunny reverb drenched guitars gently gravitating influence from the '90's-style shoegaze revival we are currently enjoying, "My Friend Morrissey" sits comfortably among the absolute best of Tigers Jaw's output thus far.

Frontman Soupy Campbell stated the following regarding the split on air:

"They recorded a song, we recorded a song, this was last year. We were talking for so long about how bad we wanted to put this split out, but it never found the right timing… it’s finally happening, it goes on sale tomorrow… The songs are obviously killer.

There’s no retail push, there’s nothing behind it. This is how we used to do records."

Album Review: Such Gold / A Loss For Words "Split" 7"

Despite the contrast in each of their sounds, Such Gold's second split EP of this year is with pop punk's underdogs A Loss for Words. Both bands have had an eventful year, with Such Gold's numerous EP releases and constant touring as well as A Loss for Words' second full-length album, 'No Sanctuary'. Tearing through with 'Scoreboard' which ploughs it way through with pounding riffs and pure adrenaline. Such Gold unleash a relentless song backed with a pop aesthetic that just builds and builds. 'Backyard' on the other hand starts out with an intricate introduction until it is interrupted by Ben Kotin's raw vocals screaming "Oh what a sight to be seen, I left my wings back up in a dream", constant tempo changes in the song provide a constant pumping to the heart of the song.

Album Review: Into It. Over It./Such Gold - Split

This split is the final release in Into It. Over It.'s 'Tweleve Towns' series and for some, a split release with Rochester, NY's Such Gold sounds pretty special. Both Into It. Over It. (aka Evan Weiss) and Such Gold have been gathering a strong following on both sides of the Atlantic, so expectations are considerably high.

Weiss' first track, 'Washington, DC' a solid blast of rock that is similar to his other band, Stay Ahead of the Weather with a decent structure and an appreciative melody that Weiss pulls off well. Whereas 'Portland, OR' is the more favorable offering with its atmospheric tone and overall mellow approach that gives Weiss the space needed to let his lyrics breathe.
