Album Review: Raining and OK - Live Like a Ghost

Arriving just in time to take advantage of the summer heat, ‘Live Like a Ghost’ delivers the feel-good lift which we’ve come to expect from Raining and OK. Whilst there may not be anything here which matches the simple beauty of their previous offering, Empty-Handed, 'Live Like a Ghost’ is a respectable third effort from the Phoneix four-piece.

Album Review: This Years Winner Is.. - Always Goes Down Smooth

Yearning from the UK's own Isle Of Man, This Years Winner Is... supply pop-punk with a generous dose of heavy guitar-work and a healthy portion of epic choruses. We review their recent EP 'Always Goes Down Smooth', and boy is this a hell of a ride.

'A Bigger Breakdown Than Lad' opens with an honest showcase of their abilities with what is easily the poppiest song on their offering containing some sweet vocals harmonies and a chorus capable of taking on some serious crowds. The band get creative with 'Mike Bush Is Not A Dude's opening salvo of riffs and guitar harmonics before letting the various vocalists intertwine their voices in effective fashion. 'We're Flying/They're Sinking' doesn't change much to the formula, if not a little more energy, but works well enough not to sound too similar to the rest.

Single Review: Round-Up: Mr. Twist, Scoundrels, The Revellions and Always Read The Label

This edition of Single Review Round-Up includes singles from Mr. Twist, Scoundrels, The Revellions and Always Read The Label.

Mr. Twist - I Come Round Again
Available now

North London's Mr. Twist know how to rock. Not overly over the top this 4-piece keep it rock steady. Their single "I Come Round Again" is only 2 minutes and 30 seconds, but hits you hard. The bass is groovy and the bands backing "oh's" fit together nicely with the band's overall guitar driven sound. "So picture perfect, with such a burning smile/Was I worth it, cause it's worth all the while,” sings Gaz Twist. The single manages to keep its momentum the entire time. This is rock 'n roll with a twist. Get into Mr. Twist.

Album Review: This City Sleeps - Seconds EP

Female fronted bands are something we are seeing more and more. Long gone are the days where it was scorned or looked down upon, with the obvious example of bands like Paramore providing women with a role model to get out there and make music. This City Sleeps are a pop-punk band from Hull/Leeds.

'Dying Is The Day Worth Living For' opens the EP, with the typical pop-punk sound we have all grown accustom to, but it's nice to hear it with the female twist over the top. Elements of hardcore come through in some bits, with chuggy guitar and double pedal, gang vocals and a catchy chorus.

'Calling Out (The Getaway)' is another cool track, but for me the vocals don't cut through the rest of the instruments at times, and it sounds like it's been autotuned a bit, and it sounds like it needs to sound a bit rawer at times. Having said this though, the songwriting is strong and the riffs are imaginative, particularly in 'When It Pours, We'll Reign' which sounds like something that could belong to some bigger pop-punk acts. The shouted vocals also add a bit of energy to the track too, and the end is very textbook, working really well.

Album Review: Quiet Company - Songs For Staying In

Quiet Company’s idea of love, sex and romance is certainly a catchy affair. At its heart ‘Songs For Staying In’ is piano driven rock, filled with gorgeous melodies, pop hooks and a sense of honesty that is endearing, it’s clear that a group of good friends have crafted this fun and energetic 7 track EP.

‘How Do You Do It?’ feels a lot like Death Cab For Cutie, only if they were born in Austin, Texas. But they break away from this in a chorus that is effortlessly catchy and feels like a pop anthem. Really letting loose with guitars heavily leading the track, this instantly reminds you that this isn’t just a slow pop ballad record.

Album Review: Spring Offensive - Pull Us Apart

Spring Offensive’s debut mini album ‘Pull Us Apart’ is so much more than just another indie band skirting around the edges of a scene that’s heard it all before. There’s a real purpose about them as musicians and song writers, not merely forming for the sake of writing within a trend, this 5-piece has a story to tell, and they won’t be hard pressed to find the listeners to tell it to.

Opening track ‘I Found Myself Smiling’ begins with almost whispers above delicate acoustic guitar plucks, like the majority of songs on this 7 track CD it builds, slowly introducing more instruments and layers which never fail to deliver great crescendos, well placed and somewhat unpredictable. Single ‘Every Coin’ is a tale of a man forced to consume the contents of his wallet, however odd lyrically you can’t help but get caught up in the narrative. It dips and dives as each verse surges towards a chorus that strips back the sound, the thumping drums disappear and leave a delicate strum of guitar over slightly whispered vocals, a stroke of pure brilliance in mature and intelligent song writing.

Travis spoke to ATP! about the new album, the Neverender shows, signing to Roadrunner Records UK and more.

Alter The Press: How has this European run of shows been, so far?
Travis Stever (guitar): Festivals can be a little tough sometimes, for us, just because we aren't as accessible as other artists who are on these festivals, and stuff. People haven't heard of us and it's a little tough. They're listening, and maybe we can get a few more fans out of that. We did Download, which was a blast. I got to see AC/DC, which was great. We got to do a bunch of German festivals, which were awesome. We did a festival in Switzerland where it was pouring out, but it was fun. It's been great. Playing around the UK is as close to America for us. The rest of Europe, it depends on the place.

Live Review: Hot Water Music, Failsafe & Southport, Islington Academy, London - 21/06/2010

Some bands are wrongly revered in their scene, others have earned the accolade with tireless touring and consistently brilliant output. Hot Water Music are undoubtedly in the latter camp, tonight even the singer of Failsafe refers to them as a ‘seminal’ band. It’s clear from the start that the headliners are the main attraction as the room takes until half an hour before they are due on stage to fill up, and the excitement that builds in the lead up is feverish.

First up are the longtime Southern absentees, Southport. Returning from a break that been too long, the band play a set of soulful punk, which is equal measures Smoking Popes and Hot Water Music with a dash of Sunny Day Real Estate. Southport’s onstage banter and unfamiliar yet brilliant songs, soon caught the attention of the smattering of people in the room, and I wouldn’t be surprised if they made a few extra fans tonight.
